The statistics will say that we have won the last three games without conceding a goal. That to me is great progress and mid table at the end of the season will be an excellent return from our topsy-turvy season. However, those people, including SC, who say we played good football must have been at a different match to me. We still rely too much on the long aimless hoof up the pitch with the inevitable heading tennis in the middle of the park. When we do try and pass it does not always come off and some of the tight little trianglular play just breaks down. Rocha has added some class to the defence and they do look more settled, especially with Hogg and Mullins in front of them, although there were a couple of scary moments that a better side than Palace would have punished. Our forward play was flakey last night and we just did not create enough chances. 2 shots on and 2 off target tells the story. Coterril has yet to convince me. He has the skill and pace but his decision making leaves a lot to be desired. Kitson and Nugent keep coming out of the middle looking for the ball so when the ball does get into the area there is no one to get onto the end of it. Don't get me wrong, I am really pleased that we are now beginning to get results and are loooking more solid - but pretty it aint.
I would take mid table obscurity anytime if it was offerred. When we look as far back as pre season , when we could not get a first team together , remember ? All the juggling about with different players , loanees , depleted squad and God knows what else , I reckon Steve would have done bloody well just to keep us in this division . Before the season started , Pompey were one of the favourites for relegation according to some bookies and up to now , God forbid that we do not go on a suicidal bad run , we should be looking ahead for another season in the Championship . Lets not forget also , that it took us I think 8 games before we registered our first win , so lets rejoice my friend.
You should make that 'mid table security' I will take that for this season, hopefully push on next season.
Amen t that Singing Blue. I'm not complaining just saying that three win do not a great team make. I am more than happy with obscurity/security. Mid table, no financial shenanigans will see us out of the news - security and obscurity will do us all good!
And we still have to play 5 of the teams below us, 4 of them at home. Mid-table obscurity will do me fine.
Considering the total mess we were in 12 months ago, the fact we still have a team to support is fine with me! Mid table is within our grasp and is some-thing I'd have bitten your hand off if it had been offered in August. please log in to view this image
