We are being linked in the north east to Sunderland centre back Michael Turner. He is approaching the final year of his current deal and his club are said to be considering allowing him to leave for a fee. Thoughts? I rated him highly whilst he was at Hull City but he seems to have struggled a little since his big money move up the east coast. I know he suffered a very serious injury - perhaps a change of scenery would benefit him? He's a good age for a centre back, late 20s
His career seems to be very similar to Curtis Davies, highly rated young CB who moved for a high fee, then struggled plus the bad injury he had. Same as CD I wouldn't mind seeing him here, aslong as that injury is behind him.
i think he's a bit different to davies to be honest. davies was transferred around for large fees at a very young age. turner came of age at hull in his mid 20s. i like both players - i probably rated turner ahead of davies actually but he seems to have matured now and had a great year last year. he'd be my first choice ahead of turner.
relatively young, premier league experience, fits the bill for us for sure, if the rumours have any substance i hope we get one or the other.
Thought he did well at Hull - providing he's over his injuries I think he'd be ok - probably means that the Davies deal got priced-out then ?
Good honest pro but his pace and distribution poor. That said he is an excellent defender, IMO but a Bruce buy so we can see Collins coming in, managers and their pets
thanks - pretty much as i thought. i was really impressed with him at hull and thought, no disrespect, that he may end up at a bigger club than sunderland. hopefully his positioning is good as ryan bennett has plenty of pace. not sure i'd want ward and turner in the same starting XI though...
interesting view here - seems disappointed that he's left but feels he's leaving because nobody wants the other two defenders they are trying to offload http://www.rokerreport.com/2012/7/25/3185799/reports-michael-turner-having-medical-at-norwich-city?
just spoke to a big sunderland fan who claims that turner is a good, solid, brave defender but that he wasn't going to be good enough if sunderland want to move on to 'the next level'. i'll let you draw your own conclusions as to what that means but i took it as european football. we aren't at that stage yet so i think it sounds a good move. unspectacular but solid, just what we need at the back
Sounds like he is better version of Ward - i.e lumpy and good in the air, not the quickest, but committed
I'm really happy with this signing, if it's true. Pretty much everything I was going to say was said in your OP supers, but I can only reiterate - he was excellent for Hull, and, if he can put his time at Sunderland behind him, then hopefully he can push on with us. Good to have someone with PL experience as well; we don't want another Football League CB taking a dozen or so games to learn his trade when we've still got four pretty inexperienced players in that position already.
How much are we paying for him? Was class at hull and seems a good lad so looks a good piece of business and not someone I would have thought of tbh
