Had a new book out. Never read any of them. In his new book be takes aim at the Liverpool fans who abuse him online and question his legacy. My opinion is that he left for Real Madrid in less than honourable circumstances but that can be overlooked. However, you don't play for Utd and because of that I'll never be his biggest fan and I don't think he should be a club ambassador. Some of what he says on this subject has annoyed me though... He writes: "I’ve never been one of those guys who you’d see hanging around their former club, wearing club gear, doing nothing in particular other than just being seen there. "Yes, a football club was once my place of work. But when I left, that contact was broken. I can’t then become a fan – a hanger-on. "Not surprisingly, I get a huge amount of abuse from what I suspect is a minority of Liverpool fans who think that, because I played for a rival club, I shouldn’t even be a Liverpool ambassador in the first place." "That, I’m afraid, is fan-centric nonsense. Not just that, when I trawl through my memory banks, recounting all the great moments I enjoyed with the fans and my fellow players, these opinions sting. My record at Liverpool is a good one. I won trophies there, scored goals, won two Golden Boots there and lifted the Ballon d’Or. I played for the club on two hundred and ninety seven occasions. I went in where it hurts for the club on countless more instances. "How does playing for a rival club negate any of that? It doesn’t. To think that way is just delusional. And even worse, while fans are happy to question my credentials, you’ve got guys hanging around. "In my daily life, I don’t shy away from going anywhere. I go to restaurants, pubs, racecourses, football grounds – I have done so for years and I’ll continue to. I can count on one hand the number of times that anyone has come up to me and given me a hard time about whatever football clubs I’ve played for, or been abusive about so-called loyalty, or challenged my views on this or that. "In the real world it doesn’t happen. On the Internet however, it’s a total free-for-all.”
I think that calling out these "hangars on" is once again missing the point and feeding off his own ego. Perhaps the people are proud to have played and just want to be around the club, perhaps they stayed at the club all their career. Perhaps they didn't play for Utd. As far as not getting abuse in person that is probably down to people being polite, if I saw him I wouldn't go up and abuse him I'd simply ignore him, this may explain the lack of abuse. He's an arrogant prick.
Even before he left the club, he wasn't looked upon in the same way as Fowler, Mcmanaman, Gerrard or Carragher. He never put Liverpool first, always England. Going to Man Utd later in his career didn't bother me that much but it was a kick in the teeth to Liverpool. He was already passed it and they offered that one last opportunity at glory. It was that or Stoke! What he'll never understand is that it is his his own attitude that got him into this position.
He just wasnt that memorable a player, the way he goes on, youd think he was an icon at the club. Fair he gave us some moments, but when I read hed played nearly 300 times for us, i was quite surprised. He is very arrogant, thinks he was much better than he was, seems to conveniently forget the months and months he spent on the treatment table.
I can't say it really bothers me that a professional footballer plays for a rival club, but it does indicate that he isn't really "one of us" as such. Some see it as a job, whereas others buy into the whole ethos and "family" nature of a club and they themselves become fans and wouldn't play for a rival. They are the ones that you expect to possibly continue a relationship with the club after their playing days. Mickey was never a very likeable character - he came across as self-important and humourless - and that coupled with his playing for Utd is probably enough to explain why so few LFC fans hold him in high regard. Having said all that, abusing someone online for being what he is is childish and cowardly and I don't condone that. I don't think he should be an ambassador for us, a club that he has shown no loyalty to, but other than that I don't really care what he does.
He should have been a memorable iconic player, he got the goals and awards for it. His attitude stopped it because fans couldn't relate to him.
It clearly bothers him so the statements are contradictory. Signing for Utd is an easy stick to beat him with, but the real issue was the way he left for Real Madrid. I personally didn't give a **** when he signed for Utd to play as a 4th choice striker, he was irrelevant to me by then.
He does seem upset that he was never looked at the way fowler was who was seen as the proper local lad hero etc. He was a brilliant player when he had pace and fair enough cant moan at him for wanting to go to Madrid when was probably at the top of his game but is probably just the way it happened that left few annoyed, similar to Suarez and Coutinho. Strange choice as ambassador given he never really seemed to care or buy into the whole lfc family thing or be a big fan of the club, doesn’t hold the same affection from the fans and had some controversial moments like the move to Madrid and later playing for United.
Owen playing for Man United bothers me. He broke an unwritten rule. If you come out of Liverpool's academy, you never ever play for Manchester United . It's like for example, Paul Scholes joining Juventus and coming back to play for Liverpool. I reckon he wouldn't, he would play for Everton. Only Owen, Sol Campbell and Alan Smith have broken that unwritten rule. Sol Campbell did it with Arsenal. Owen pulled down his pants and **** all over the Liverpool shirt. Does he deserve abuse? Yes. Should he be a Liverpool ambassador? No. Is he now considered a Liverpool legend? Not in my eyes. I just cannot forgive that. Once a Manc, never a red. It's like what Robbie Fowler did. When he left Liverpool he only joined clubs that hate Manchester United, Leeds and Man City. They hate Man United as much as Liverpool do. James Milner when he left Leeds, did the same thing, Man City and Liverpool. They hate Man United as much as Leeds do. James Milner himself admitted that he hates Manchester United. There is nothing wrong with players hating clubs. Wayne Rooney and Gary Neville hate Liverpool, Steven Gerrard hates Man United and Everton and Fernando Torres hates Real Madrid.
Are you sure it was Owen who wrote that ? He doesn't seem to be stating the obvious unlike his memorable commentary moments such as "Which ever team scores more goals usually wins " and the likes of this classic - "If there’s a bit of rain about, it makes the surface wet."
I think Owen is the worst pundit I've ever heard, and that's an enterprise that involves some serious competition.
I think it's his "you should have more respect for me attitude" that really annoys me. **** him I can't stand the bloke. Despite his ramblings I'd be quite happy to say it to his face if he really wants that kind of behaviour.
Owen had criticised Newcastle and their fans in his book (I think). Owen as said he wasn't happy in the last few years of his career and couldn't wait to retire. Shearer said something like "we could tell... whilst getting £120k per week" Owen responded by saying Shearer wasn't as loyal as it appears, claiming Shearer tried to force through a move to us after Sir Bobby Robson left him on the bench. Lineker then commented suggesting there was clearly history in the comments Owen basically confirmed this by saying he thought they were mates but Shearer has a issue with him, he also said he find out Shearer had a issue via a third party. PS...I don't do Twitter either
I thought that but think it would be a bit one sided. Guess it comes down to how much you dislike Owen...
There is a serious list of rubbish pundits. I'll do a list. Paul Merson He echoes himself more than Fred Elliot and Forghorn Leghorn. Lee Dixon Jamie Redknapp 'He's a fret'. It is Threat. Martin Keown Charlie Nicholas Alan 'Gaweth Bawwy' Smith. Rio Ferdinand 'It's great man innit' Paul Scholes.....He sends insomniacs to sleep Ryan Giggs. He's got a face like Cliff Richard.....One you would love to slap. Phil Neville. The less intelligent one of the Neville sisters. Matt Le Tissier. Danny Murphy. Robbie Savage Chris Sutton Paul Ince Gary Rowett Alan McInally. Jason ****y. Joe Cole aka Joke Hole. Is he actually able to feed and dress himself? Glenn Hoddle Mr monotone voice. Jermaine Jenas Alan Sheepra Shearer
