Michael Owen will retire from football at the end of the season. Had it not been for all these injuries I am certain he would have went on to become England's all time top scorer. Back in his Liverpool days he was one of the best strikers in the world and he has always consistently scored goals for England. He formed a excellent partnership with our own Emile Heskey and their all round play complimented each other very well. Forget his past for years where his career has taken a massive nose dive with his forever sitting on benchs and being injured. But before that he was some play. Such a shame and he is only 33. Back in his day though he was some player. His 2 late goals in the FA Cup final against Arsenal showed what he was about
Was very good when he first came on the scene but in terms of 'world standing' I tend to agree with what Martin Keown and Mark Lawrenson said on football focus - broadly it was all about his pace and once that started to go it was the beginning of the end for him ... all players careers come to an end and sometimes it is all too easy to become a record breaker - partly down to meaningless friendlies that are little more than training games - plus internationals against San Marino! - if you want to put Michael Owen's career into perspective you need to compare it to the likes of Bobby Charlton and the number of international goals he scored from midfield, during an era when there wasn't really such a thing as a 'friendly' international ...
