I'm sure you've all seen it by now!... I wouldn't of known it was legal! If you haven't seen it the links are below. He scored a worldy free kick in the same game too. End result was 6-1

It's a pleasure to watch this Man

Did this with a mate playing in Hull for Holy Trinity back in the fifties. I was Messi!

Henry and Perez messed it up trying it in an Arsenal match a few years ago

Meh. He's just copying Johan Cruyff.

Makes Ronaldo look pants. Messi's so much better.

Also, that Geordie commentator is ****ing great. I've heard him a few times and I think he believes Messi to literally be God.

The Geordie is Ray Hudson - used to play for Newcastle before coming over to the US in late 70's, playing for about half a dozen teams (including Fort Lauderdale Strikers when George Best played with 'em) and then coaching a couple of teams. Became a TV pundit (if you could call him that !) about 10 years ago. He does know his football, but has a quirky manner about him, which the N. Americans seem to like. I find him bloody irritating.

I think the ruling is that the ball must travel forwards to be legal. As long as the team mate on the end of it didn't enter the penalty box too early, all stands well.

Correct...team mate can't enter the box until the ball has moved forward a complete revolution. I think the penalty taker could even hoist the ball (forward) into the air and a team mate could run in & nod it into the net...but I've never seen that variation done. Can you imagine that ?

I believe(as an ex-referee) the ball must travel it's own circumference forward to be legal. Remember Puskas scoring a penalty which would now be legally ruled out.

He placed the ball and went back to take it and after the whistle approached the ball again, stopped and bent down as if to re-position the ball. Still bending he toe - poked the ball past the goalie.
Struggling to remember the match but believe it was in an International game.

It is quite simple. A penalty is a direct free kick and the same rules apply.

If Man City and Pep can get this guy to The Premier League, watch many others follow in spite of the yellow brick road leading to China!

I guess it's just a case of personal preference. I find the Geordie twat way over the top just like the the Hispanic commentators who shriek GGGGGGGGGGGGGGOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLL, whom I find equally annoying. I prefer a calmer, more "old school" approach to commentary but with nuances. One of my favourites was when asked what card the portly Dutch referee was about to produce, Chis Waddle said, "The way this blokes been reffing, I wouldn't be surprised if it's the joker."
