Barcelona's all-time leading goalscorer Lionel Messi says he is staying because it is "impossible" for any team to pay his release clause and he does not want to face the club in court. https://www.bbc.com/sport/football/54032101
Damn - well that's our season going down the tubes - thought he would make the transfer to the Tigers, oh well.
Not that he's likely to (being a model pro), but if anyone could get away with it, Messi could. That is, play in first gear for the last year of his contract to get his revenge on Barca. In retrospect, it seems like an oversight/poorly negotiated deal his advisors (still his father ?) made by including such a restrictive clause in his last contract. Probably a trade-off to maximize his salary I guess.
It was only restrictive because of the way this season has gone, any other year he would've already moved, but because everything was pushed back a few months, it all went tits up.
As I said - a poorly negotiated contract that didn't allow for "unforseen circumstances". - Insurrection, revolution, pandemics. Fire your legal advisors Leo !
