Barcelona's Lionel Messi has broken Gerd Müller's record of goals in a calendar year. He was doubtful to do this after being stretchered off in the Champions League last week but he returned to action last night against Real Betis to net was is his 86th goal in this calendar year, breaking Muller's record of 85 goals. Anyone else think he is the best player in the world? Can anyone think of someone better? Incredible achievement for someone of his age! Well done to him!
I'm struggling to get to like him at the moment. No doubt he has talent by he does try some fancy flicks too often
After the football midweek last week I watched a programme about him and it showed a completely different aspect to his talent and how he has to train differently to maintain full fitness. The lad is pure class and I wish he was able to play over here but I honestly believe some of our defenders would kick him out of the game.
There's no doubt Messi is impressive as a goalscorer, but I'm still more impressed by Gerd Muller. He played in an era of ultra defensive football and the heavier, slower ball [remember they had to change the two points for a win to three to encourage attacking football] and he didn't take penalties or free-kicks. He was just the personification of a striker. He'd score goals in any era. He'd have a wonderful time in today's more attacking style.
The main area of my not-giving-a monkey's though [it's true, I'm feigning real interest] is due to the fact that neither Messi [nor Muller] plays [or played] for Saints. If either did [or had] I'd be ecstatic. I'm very partisan over such things, primarily due to a lack of interest.
Maybe we could get Messi in on loan while Adam recovers? Not really an adequate replacement I know but he'd do a job for us.
