One of the best extreme metal bands ever to come out of Sweden?

I don't really understand them myself, but their average score on Metacritic is a lot higher than that of Dr. Dre. Thoughts? <ok>

I think they have a better way with words than Dre as well.

The implement, the device of my extinction
The terminating clockwork of my gleeful bane
The definitive scourge of its mockery
The end-art instruments, lethality attained

Poetry.

I really don't understand death metal and all that ****. Really loud overdrive guitars trying to play as fast as possible rather than actually caring about any kind of tune, while some hairy guy growls about death or dead bodies or vampires or some ****. The whole thing is beyond me.

Not exactly Jethro Tull is it..?

One random example off the top of my head:

Meanwhile back in the Year One.
When you belonged to no-one.
You didn't stand a chance son, if your pants were undone.
Cause you were bred for humanity and sold to society.
One day you'll wake up.
In the present day
A million generations removed from expectations.
Of being who you really want to be.
Skating away, skating away.
Skating away on the thin ice of a new day.

Now that's poetry, set to music. :)

To me death metal sounds like a ****ed up guy having a spasm and a mental break down at the same time.

Very little melody, but there is rhythm. There are some pretty intricate time signature changes and polyrhythms in this particular track. I'm still not going to listen to it, because it's not my cup of tea and I want some melody, but I have to recognise that there is talent there.

I think my dad saw them live once in his youth. He also saw Uriah Heep :)

I was careful not to say untalented, but then being able to walk across a room on your hands is a talent and I wouldn't pay someone to do that for me (nor would I even illegally download it!)

"Since the last time you heard from me I lost some friends
Well, hell, me and Snoop, we dipping again
Kept my ear to the streets, signed Eminem
He's triple platinum, doing 50 a week
Still, I stay close to the heat
And even when I was close to defeat, I rose to my feet
My life is like a soundtrack I wrote to the beat
Treat my rap like Cali weed, I smoke till I sleep
Wake up in the A.M., compose a beat
I bring the fire till you're soaking in your seat
It's not a fluke, it's been tried, I'm the troop
It's "Turn Out the Lights" from the World Class Wreckin' Cru
I'm still at it, After-mathematic
In the home of drivebys and ak-matics
Swap meets, sticky green, and bad traffic
I dip through then I get skin, D-R-E"

If you want poetry and story telling, listen to the "Slim Shady LP" that's superb.

These guys come from Sweden too. Koop are about as far away from the Meshuggah combo as you could possibly get!

Or you could get in the Volvo and drive to Finland. Le Futur Pompiste.
