Every time I turn on the bloody tv, it screams that I should get myself down to the cinema to see The Iron lady, the Thatcher movie. They say she's brilliant. But others are hinting that her accent is rubbish. As an Aussie, I can't really tell. Is she **** or not?
Mate, I haven't seen the film yet, just trailers. I don't think anyone can really reproduce the shrill, nagging whine that Thatcher used to boss us all about with, but I reckon Meryl's the girl to give it a try. Great actress imo.
I know a lot of people dislike Thatcher, but that comes with being a polly. But if we're going to be fair, was she good for the UK?
Best thing that ever happened to the country, but I'm sure most on this site will disagree, because most on this site are left wing, dole scrounging scumbags.
She was a necessary evil imo. Took on and beat the trade unions who had held the country to ransom for years, turned the City of London from an Old Boys network into a meritocracy (thus creating a new breed of flash barrow-boys choking on their wads of cash), protected Britain's interests in Europe, and created a nation of homowners with a stake in society. On the down side, she was unbelievably callous. Whole communities in old industrial towns were basically left to rot, and many have still not recovered. Unemployment rocketed under her. She badly mishandled the IRA hunger strikes, turning thugs to into martyrs, and badly damaged Britain's reputation around the world in the process. She also alienated all our European partners, (though she still got a better deal out of them than Cameron has so far managed). She also presided over an era that saw Britain become, imo, a harsher and more materialistic place than it had been.
Funny that. I had the impression most on this site were foaming at the mouth right wing nutters of the "bring back hanging" variety. We can't both be right, can we?
Apparently the film is about her fall into mental health hell and her deterioration into a gibbering vegetable so it might be worth a watch after all.
