Meryl Streep is the outstanding actress of her generation. And the clue is in the word "actress". She's played English women plenty of times before (Plenty, The French Lieutenant's Woman), I'm sure she''l do a decent turn as the grocer's daughter from Grantham. As for struggling with the Aussie accent, well it is a bit wierd. Even the natives seem to struggle with it, going by the current crop of Fosters adds.
