Perhaps not the most reliable source but what do you think if this is true? Mertesacker out, Vertonghen in? http://www.mirrorfootball.co.uk/tra...season-according-to-report-article888160.html
Utterly ridiculous article from a truly awful newspaper. Doesn't say who wrote the article, but sounds like a John Cross special - he's about the last person who knows anything when it comes to Arsenal. He just pretends he knows stuff.
I imagine that over this Easter weekend the Mirror had some blank space on their sports page and wondered what they could come up which might provoke some comment. Never bought a copy of that trash in my life and never will
There needs to be some sort of standards in newspapers. This is just truly awful, it doesn't even make any sense!
That's what makes it so damn awful. Even i could come up with a better story than this in 15 seconds!
I would like to keep Mertesacker but.... Vertonghen is a higher calibre of defender than Merts or Kos. He has both strength/ size and technical ability. (with our defenders it's either or on those fronts)
We should sell Djourou instead if we're going for Vert. Merte is one of the reasons Podolski is coming, and half a season is not enough time to evaluate a player of his class anyway.
If we are getting Vertonghen, I'd be surprised if he is going to be used as a CB ahead of Vermaelen, Kos and Metersacker. To be honest the whole thing puzzles me, because it doesn't seem to make sense. Selling Metersacker makes it seem more sensible, so maybe Wenger has decided Metersacker was a mistake. Of course on the other hand it could be complete bollocks.
That would make me happy. As it stands, our defence is looking good, but Vert coming in would make me happier and Squishy gone. I'm still not sure about our left back position and hopefully Vert can fill that more solidly and cover other positions as CB and DM.
