on this very day march 10th, back in 1939 one of the all time safc greats was born.
len ashurst born in aintree liverpoo joines safc in 1957 and stayed till 1970 and played a total of 458 times for the club and scored 4 goals.
in 1970 he recieved a testimonial against our dear friends from ne1, before moving on to the place they hang monkeys.
after managing several clubs he returned to safc for a short spell in 1984.
although to young to ever see him play his name is famous in the history of safc, and it is to the like off mr. ashurt etc we owe our thanks for making safc the greatest family club in the world.
although born a scouser len ashurt will always be an honourable mackem, to the likes of him we owe so many memories and for this i salute him

He had a good wing half in front of him called Jimmie McNab and a great centre half called Charlie Hurley (who was known as the best centre half in the world)
 
Len was one of the best full backs we have had-having players like Stan Anderson,Jimmy McNab and Charlie Hurley in front of him helped but I think he would have been the same player no matter who was in front of him.

Couldn't agree more about Jimmie McNab, always one of my favourite players and along with Harvey/Anderson and Hurley one of the best half back lines that we've ever had. Len Ashurst and his right back partner Cec Irwin weren't too shoddy either. What a defence we had in those days!
 
Didn't realise he had scored 4. Remember standing in the Roker end watching him, put the ball over the bar. He was only a yard out.........Banana foot Ashurst
 
Thoroughly recommend his autobiography. Couldn't put it down.
