After watching last nights game i was looking at the highlights ,as you do! I suddenly got a flashback to when I was a young boy (A Long time ago). My Granda used to take me to the match and we sat just above the Tunnel at Roker Park, I could only have been 4 or 5 at the time and it was one of my first games. We had just been awarded a corner and as the noise from the last attack dropped a new chant started. Quietly at first but slowly building and getting louder each second! Charley! Charley! Charley!...The Big Man started to walk towards the opponents box..As he walked he seemed to grow Larger with each step..by the time he arrived his Chest was broader, His Shoulders wider and I swear he was at least 6 inches Taller!! His arrival was announced by a huge cheer! The Famous Roker Roar deafening a small kid but making me so proud to be a Sunderland Supporter!! Big King Charley didn't always get to the resulting Ball in but by God he made a nuisance of himself and the defenders knew he was trouble........Back to last night's game. As i watched the match in about the seventh minute a BIG lad from the back strolled up for a Corner...He looked calm and determined to create a disturbance. The Ball was lofted into the box and the young man took off! No one was stopping him!! he Powered his way through and... 1-0.......... It is something we have lacked in recent seasons, a Huge presence in the box for set pieces, But Big Dan made a nuisance of himself again last night!! I would love to hear the chant "Big Dan! Big Dan!" or "Ballard! Ballard!' from the fans when we have a set piece and he is heading forward, Not just to give him a lift but also to warn the opposition what they are up against! Well done tonight young man and Thanks for bringing this 'Old Fan' back such a sweet and poignant memory!!!!
have noticed that about him in recent games, a lot of determination in the lad as you can see on the replay from last night, had his eyes firmly on the ball without a worry for where the defenders were...growing at both ends of the pitch is dan.
What a memory that is Charley, Charley...like it was yesterday and not 60 years ago. Dan Ballard has big boots to fill but he's doing ok so far.
My Dad is 75 and I've never seen him starstruck as he was when Hurley was on the pitch before the Hull game in 2017
November 1979 in the Mecca <Tiffany’s > Locarno I was there and we voted king Charlie Great night met most of our previous stars

My dad is 79 and when he starts talking about Hurley he turns into a 10 year old star struck kid. You can hear the excitement / awe in his voice when he describes watching him amd how good he was
I have an everlasting memory of Charlie, he went to head clear a low ball as their forward was going to kick it. Big collision, their player went down holding his leg. Charlie just shook his head and carried on.
