Guess it'll be a long time coming till the next one, bet some of you were there. Bob Stokoe led Sunderland to victory in Europe on this day in 1973. Sunderland recorded a 2-1 victory over Sporting Lisbon at Roker Park 38 years ago today. Bob Stokoe led his FA Cup holders to a famous win over the Portuguese side in front of 31,568 on Wearside in the European Cup Winners' Cup. Sunderland had beaten Vasas Budapest 3-0 in aggregate in the first round to set up a two-legged tie against Lisbon, who found themselves 2-0 down thanks to goals from Bobby Kerr and Micky Horswill. The visitors pulled a goal back but it wasn't enough as Sunderland ran out 2-1 winners. However, the consolation goal was to prove crucial as Sporting won the return leg 2-0 two weeks later to progress to the next stage of the competition. Sunderland (1st Leg): Montgomery, Malone, Bolton, Horswill, Watson, Young, Kerr, Hughes, Halom, Porterfield, Tueart. Sunderland (2nd Leg): Montgomery, Malone, Bolton, Horswill (Lathan), Watson, Young, Kerr, Hughes (Guthrie), Halom, Porterfield, Tueart

Yes I was there..And the reason there was only a 31,000 crowd is because the club tripled the entry prices, and if my memory serves me correctly there was also no child prices..
