One of my all-time favourite Charlton players. Killer & Flash would never have scored half their goals without his service. Like that goal of Killer's that we see before every game- well Powell received the ball in the right-back position and took it all the way to the byline on the left, pausing only to exchange passes with Phil Warman, before planting a cross precisely on Killer's left foot, which did the rest. He also scored a header once. Can't remember who against, but he ran straight to the north stand, pointing to his head in amazement. I don't think we've had such a consistent crosser of the ball since. IMO the best crosser at Charlton at the moment is Michael Smith. Not too different to Powell in build either. Hope Paddy gets a good turn-out for his testimonial.
I'd agree with every word of that FHB. The goal was against Brighton in my favourite ever Charlton game when we beat them 4-3 - Paddy was clinging to the wire netting like his life depended on it. Wonderful. And I've never seen anyone get as many indirect free kicks...
Paddy was before my time so my fondest memory is seeing the beautiful pitch in the prem and wondering if he went on holiday last season from about december
i caught him in his heyday for us and I was there that day the Big Match filmed that goal he scored when he got the ball near our corner flag, took it upfield, passed it and ran all the way to the opposition penalti área to slot it home. I always remember Kieth Peacock as a guy who played every pass backward, while Killer and Flanagan scored for fun, but Colin Powell was a joy to watch, and I used to expect him to move up to the old división one every season. Out of interest, remembering the 11th september twin towers in New York horror, were any other Addicks surprised to find George Bush sent a guy called Colin Powell to do the press conference. Good choice, but better to get him to trim the White House lawn.
Out of respect for our Colin Powell, the American one insisted that his name was pronounced differently (Coe-lin)
I expect The Doctor to play his first-choice team, to start off with at least. Even if we play 4-5-1, which seems likely, some of our midfielders are going to be disappointed. If Wilson is back to his best he may take Pritchard's place on the right, Harriott on the left, Jacko and Hughes in their respective roles, and one of either Gower, Hollands, Pritchard(if he doesn't play wide right), Cousins or Stephens, although Cousins may be prepared as Hughes' replacement. I expect: Pritchard;Gower;Hughes;Jacko; Harriott; to start.
Can't see any mention of Church in the line up so I asume he's gone to look for a club who pay wages. 0-0 half time, and not much on offer according to Charlton Life.
