Anyone on here got memories of May 11th 1991, last day of the season at Maine Road when we got relegated (thanks in part to Niall Quinn!)? I was there and I really think it was that day I truly understood what being a Sunderland fan was all about. Can't remember much about the day itself, except the amazing numbers who went, and the noise from our lot at the twists and turns of the day (Harford's scored! Yay! Oh no it was an own goal! Sigh......). And at the end when the players walked over to us and were mostly in tears, just like us, even though we were still singing and cheering. I also remember the great respect shown by the City players and supporters at the end. They were fantastic and one reason why I really would like City to win on Sunday. Their fans have been through the mill like us over the years and most of them are not 'plastic' 'johnny-come-lately' fans like some we could mention.
Whilst i wasn't there, a bit pre-occupied in another part of the world...I also wish that City win the title, for their loyal fans...
I was there with the lads and it was an incredible sight to see so many SAFC fans at am away game. There are conflicting reports of anywhere from 12,000 to 15,000 that day. Man City fans, players (I remember Niall was gutted when he scored that day) and Reidy were sympathetic and respectful too. Good luck City and I too would be happy to see a new club take the title.
i was in the kippax stand where 2 sunderland fans were fighting among themselves at half time , 1 of them was taking the piss out of the other 1 for looking like joey boswell from "bread", anyway apart from that it's probably the biggest away following i've ever seen, incredible atmosphere even after the final whistle, made me proud to be a mackem
My abiding memory of City games was the semi-final 1956 at Villa Park. Saved all my paper round money and stood in the rain for an hour before the game and was soaked to the skin. Match played in mud up to your ankles and City keeper Bert Trautmann kept us out and they got one chance and scored. The rain his the tears.
This was one of my first away games, I was 12, and following the 1990 World Cup, I'd recently turned from a 'lad who watched football' to a 'Sunderland Fan'. I was a hex that season, I went to 3 away games (Norwich, Chelsea & City), we played superbly on all 3, and lost all 3 by the same score , 3-2! Those present will vividly remember the fencing in the stand, we started sloppily as ****, but became really dominant, Quinny scored, I recall this, but I can never quite remember if we went 2-0 down, or if ut went 1-1, 1-2, 2-2. What I remember is Gabbiadini's header rattling in off the bar for 2-2, and the scenes of mayhem around me will live with me till my dying day. I have NEVER seen a goal, not just for us, but for ANYONE celebrated so wildly and with such vigour, I actually get a bit of a buzz just thinking about it now. Lads were up the fence all over, it was absolute and utter bedlam. I'll never forget it.
Aye, as mentioned in post I can't totally recall the order of things, I was only 12, but the Gabbiadini header and ensuing bedlam is etched on my memory till death! Also, I'm not comm!
That weekend I was on a football weekend trip to Huddersfield with the Ryhope team I played for, and we all went the short distance along the M62 for this game...I remember that before the game we were stuck in a traffic jam and a Man City fan in the car alongside us was giving us the thumbs down sign..Almost to a man, we were all giving him the two fingered salute and shouting abuse out of the windows of the bus...But then this Man city fan started shaking his head and mouthing the words ''no, you've got a flat tyre"..The lad was just trying to help us and we had given him some dogs abuse...
Wouldn't it be nice just once, to actually discuss a major game where we didn't ultimately **** it up? To be quite honest although I have been present at all the major disappointments SAFC have been involved in, the highs are very few and far between. Its time that was reversed and I desperately hope MoN is that catalyst but like all things red & white, this is done more in hope than expectation.
I was there as well. What a fookin atmosphere. I was with me mate and wife's and at one point thought it was going to get really nasty but at the end I was so proud to support SAFC. The city fans at the end were great but the 15000 Sunderland fans were unbelievable. That day will stay with me till I die!
haha ****ing hell sorry, as our lass would say, i've had a blonde moment, getting back to that match, ecstacy, agony, bedlam, typical from a sunderland point of view, i remember when we equalized, then got a corner soon after, the roker roar was unbelieveble, we sucked bennett's goal into the net, shame gary owers let quinny equalize for them otherwise who knows
