There is an article on the football league website talking about the financial health of a number of clubs in the football league. According to a survey there are 13 clubs outside the premiership who are either subject to court action or who have failed to submit their accounts. As it is near the end of the season and the sale of next seasons season tickets will come in it will apparently mask the problem for a while but if this survey is right then there is going to be some fun and games next season. The breakdown of leagues with troubled clubs is 3 in the Championship, 6 in league one and 4 in league 2. The main problem appears to be wages of players which it implies are too high to be sustained. Most of the clubs do not have rich benefactors. Clubs are therefore continuing to spend money they don't have and the suggestion is the **** will hit the fan sooner or later. For all the people who criticise Brent for refusing to throw money at Argyle and living within it's means they should read this article.
my club wycombe have just been given a transfer embargo for late submission of accounts or rather not submitting them ,so its not looking good for us
Time for a return to the wage cap perhaps, though it will never happen. The money being earned by the premiership players has a roll on effect down through the leagues and it cannot be sustained. The new rules coming in should supposedly address this but I am sceptical that rich benefactors will not find a way around them.
I saw a similar article http://www.financialdirector.co.uk/financial-director/feature/2165287/footballs-punctured-finances The interesting bits were firstly the huge losses being made in the Championship: £138m out of £194m in the non-Premier League league as a whole. You'd think clubs struggling along on 2 or 3 thousand gates would be the ones losing money but it's not, it's overspending by those in relatively lofty league positions. Secondly, the negative relationship between increased spending and club income: " The necessary cost of progression is investment in the playing squad through additional wages and transfer fees. But is it a price worth paying? According to Deloitte, all the clubs that improved their Premier League position, with the exception of Fulham, reported wage growth in excess of the extra revenue generated - ranging from £4.8m for Bolton Wanderers to £36.3m for Manchester City." In short, it isn't worth it as we've found out!
This time in a few years we may only have 3 leagues. The amount of clubs in trouble or going to be in the **** will certainly increase. We were very lucky to survive but i am sure some won't be as lucky. The wages are the biggest problem, they need capping sooner to allow clubs to survive .
I've just seen this article via twitter, not sure if you Greens have seen it - apologises if you already have it posted somewhere on your board. http://thetwounfortunates.com/is-plymouth-argyle-still-in-turmoil/
Not interested brb, we have come out of this mess and it seemed the hard way...would be nice for once if people give us just a little, just a little credit for where we are now in league 2. All this speculation is not needed and when we survive in several wks to come it will appear like we are still the bad ones. Thanks for the update but they can shove it where the sun don't shine Matey!
Thanks brb for highlighting that.....I'm too involved with day to day living at present to sift through all things relating to the club........and busy looking over my shoulder at the chasing pack in the prediction league.
BRB - take no notice of the resident curmudgeons, thanks for the link. Progress, far from consisting in change, depends on retentiveness. When change is absolute there remains no being to improve and no direction is set for possible improvement: and when experience is not retained, as among savages, infancy is perpetual. Those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it - George Santayana 1905.
A bad-tempered or surly person......who on earth did you have in mind notDistant on this nice friendly (generally) little back-water.
Plym, we are on your shoulder my friend . We will keep up the chase on the predictions (as best i can). How is the wife?
Brb, thanks for the link but it seems a lot of drivel to read. good luck in the league tomorrow!! Bet your looking forward to the pasyie!!
Hi joe.........Mrs Plymborn is coming along slowly but ok thanks........the average is around three months to get mobile with possibly no sticks. The interesting part of that write-up is near the end, where it talks about what James Brent has had to pay for the club......not quite nothing as a few have decided, could be £6 million minus selling the ground to the council.......depends how you interpret it I expect.
