Turns out today’s black arm bands were in honour of FA Cup winning CB Mel Blyth. Partnered Jim Steele at the back. Only a couple of seasons at Saints, towards the end of his career, but surely qualifies as a Saints legend by virtue of that FA Cup winner’s medal. Was an imposing figure and hard as nails iirc.

I met Mel, Hughie Fisher, Jim McCalliog, Jim Steele & Lawrie about 6 or 7 years ago when they gave a chat at a pub I frequent in Shirley, he came across as a really nice unassuming guy and was happy to chat with anyone in the pub.
They all came across very well although Jim Steele would be hard to keep up with on a night out, nice bloke but nutty as a fruitcake.
