i am fascinated with meaux abbey as i believe it is the birth place of hull,I was brought up very close to where the abbey once stood i know the abbey stood for over 450 years and was demolished in the mid 16th century to enhance the defences for hull. I know loads about the history the abbots the land it owned and it had the largest collection of books in the land for its age. The one thing i can not seem to find is any paintings of the abbey or floor plans, can anyone on this board point me in the right direction to find a painting or floor plan. I have tried hull history centre they have a painting of the abbey but it is not for public viewing.
I assume you have tried all the online search stuff but Wiki has some information I just don't know if its relevant tou your requirements. http://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Meaux_Abbey
Meaux Abbey was post Norman conquest, we also have a fascinating earlier history in Easy Yorkshire. Look up the Kingdom of Deira which predates Northumberland and before that our local Celtic tribe was the Parisi who had their own Arras culture separate to the Brigantes, all roots of our unique separateness from the rest of Yorkshire which the Vikings recognised as a distinct and an equal third Riding.
The stone from the demolition of Meaux Abbey was used to build Hull Castle... please log in to view this image
Not the Abbey as such, but read some interesting stuff when I read the OS map and saw "decoy" marked. Decoy farm was the scene of a relatively recent murder and rape, but the decoy itself was quite an elaborate method of trapping ducks, which intrigued me.
I like this picture. I was told a local historian who lives on longhill might have a drawing of the abbey but i dont have a name or address.
