Which won't come as a tremendous surprise after a poor season and the dour entertainment on show. But Randy Lerner's shortlist already comprises Brendan Rodgers and Roberto Martinez, according to this article. Makes you wonder just how far 'under the radar' NCFC really are - although he may not have finished drawing up his 'shortlist' just yet! http://www.goal.com/en-gb/news/2896...-ready-to-sack-mcleish-in-summer-and-overhaul My view is it would be a step sideways for Martinez, but to a bigger club, in terms of fanbase etc, and a step backwards for guys such as Rodgers, Lambert etc.
Well he went for Martinez before so clearly rates him very highly. I would guess Martinez would still be his first choice, but I don't know if anything has changed that will make him accept the job this time. And I am very happy for us to go under the radar if it means we keep Lambert.
i don't believe rodgers would take that job, i don't believe martinez would either, so the chances of our boss taking it seem more remote than they would have been at the start of the season. their fans really get on their teams' back, no matter who the manager is! even o'neill got fed up with the job - lambert will listen to him
I doubt if Martinez will leave Wigan, Dave Whelan has given him so much support in dire circumstances, they really are like father and son!
Plus they go way back to when Martinez was a player for them. I think Whelan helped him settle down over here when he first came to England.
Assuming Wigan stay up I don't see him leaving. As you say he has a good relationship with the board and staying up after their recent run must leave a feel good factor at the club. As Villa like ex Birmingham managers maybe they'll go for Bruce. Although the last one didn't go down too well
Villa are in a place that used to be the second city of the empire. They have certainly been one of the top 6 teams over the last 30 years. They have won the European Cup. And they made a mistake in appointing McLeish. He had relegated Birmingham and his style of play is defence first. You cannot defend your way in the Prem now as we have proved and Wigan are now showing that you can get out of dire straits if you use your attacking skills. If he had achived top 8 with his dire style then he may have been forgiven but they might not even stay up. It may serve them a purpose if they did go down. They were promoted along with us in 1975 and of course beat us in the LC final, the only time both finalists were from outside the top division. And after that promotion they went on to success.
big club villa, big potential but they are in need of a major rebuilding job with very little funds to do so. never understood why they appointed mcleish in the first place - it was always likely to end in disaster. at this moment in time, and this may seem a bit harsh, but at a lower level i'd liken them to ipswich. a club who should be doing better than they are in the league they contest, seem to lose most weeks, yet still finish just below mid table every year.
How have we seemed to lose most weeks Supers? I think we've lost 3 out of 16. I understand the point though and although I'm biased that's the very reason I don't think it would be a step backward for Lambert. Villa should be challenging for at least a Europa place every season and let's be honest Norwich could easily slip back down next season (although I wouldn't predict it). Getting McLeish was a terrible idea but out of all the options I'm sure the best they could do would be to try to nick Lambert. I think he's just a step ahead of Rogers at the moment and Villa would be a good move for him.
I must admit that I think Villa is the sort of job PL would consider the next step up in his career as long as they stay up. Lerner knows little about the game so it depends on who is advising him as to whether PL was considered a big enough name.
With the offer of some cash to spend I could see PL using Villa as a stepping stone in his career as I can't see one of the big boys taking a flier on him if he stays with us but if he went there and got a couple of top six finishes then who knows? This could be a total disaster as managers tend to take away their favourite players with them when they leave however I think that PL probably feels that he has a bit of unfinished business here and can lay down a legacy. It is always a risk changing job and he currently works for pretty decent employers who have shown him that they will back him and a he has a hugely supportive fan base and gets to live in Norfolk rather than the West Midlands (surely a reason to stay). Like 99.9999999999% of City fans I want him to stay and I reckon it would take a fair amount of Mr Lerner's cash to tempt him away. Fingers crossed anyway.
you knew what i meant. i could use barnsley too - whenever i check their results they seem to have lost yet they never go down! nobody is saying lambert to villa would be a downwards step but it sure as hell wouldn't be a big step upwards! sideways maybe, perhaps a step up the ladder potentially, but what nobody outside norwich seems to understand is that there is genuinely no logic in him moving to a club like villa at the moment. he would have no money, an average squad and a set of fans demanding instant results. at norwich he has infinite backing and control over everything at the club from the look of the kit to who the tea lady is. he is on to the biggest winner ever at carrow road and until the right job comes along - and it will one day and it'll be a biggy, he has literally no reason to move - it could really jeopardise his career if he gets the move wrong. he is very astute - nobody that astute would go to villa from norwich at this moment in time. he is still a young manager - he has time on his side to build a legacy! not many managers get that chance these days and i think he knows it
...roeder, their chief scout will get it...and hopefully he'll take them from the championship to league one...i'd pay to see that...
Fair point Supers I agree! I fancy the scousers will be the favourites to secure PL once they ditch King Kenny!
also, i have to say its hilarious that whenever there is a job come up that could be deemed 'potentially big', the ipswich fans start creaming themselves that lambert will be on his way! poor binners
now you see, that could happen! that would be the sort of move i'd say he wouldn't be able to turn down at ANY time. liverpool yes, united yes, arsenal yes, chelsea yes, man city yes, maybe even spurs, but villa? no way. not the way they are today.
