I dare him to call me a clown! O'Neil despairs at 'immature' McClean's Twitter return By COLIN YOUNG PUBLISHED: 22:00, 8 February 2013 | UPDATED: 22:54, 8 February 2013 Comments (2) Share Sunderland winger James McClean has left himself open to further death threats and returned to Twitter, despite warnings from manager Martin OâNeill to stay off the social networking site. The Republic of Ireland international, who looks set to miss todayâs home clash with Arsenal with an ankle injury picked up in his countryâs win over Poland this week, has been urged to stay off Twitter after repeated clashes with supporters. He was sent death threats last year after declining to wear a printed poppy on his Sunderland shirt in November and after pledging his allegiance to the Republic and criticising Northern Ireland supporters. He's back: Sunderland's James McClean has returned to Twitter McClean, who held talks with OâNeill on Friday faces hefty fines from his club if he uses language to incite further problems. An exasperated OâNeill, who was among those who persuaded McClean to come off Twitter after he criticised Ireland manager Giovanni Trapattoni for leaving him out of a World Cup qualifier in Kazakhstan, warned the Derry-born midfielder his tweets will be monitored by the club. OâNeill said: 'Is he maturing? No. He has gone back on Twitter, even against advice of the club. I have to say maybe he will look out for himself then. 'I am learning these things all the time, such as from my daughters. I have no major problem with people going on these things but what they donât seem to realise is that when they go out there it goes into the public domain. 'As long as he doesnât start to talk about the football club and use derogatory comments, then fine, and as long as he doesnât swear. Despair: Martin O'Neill is unhappy that McClean has returned to social media 'These are the things I would take exception to. You might say it is the kettle calling the pot black, I know. I am not so sure what we can do. I will have to really have a look at it and see. Has he learned? We will see. I am allowing it to settle down.â McClean returned from international duty limping heavily and has had treatment on his ankle injury for the last two days. He is a major doubt today. The former Derry City winger, who broke into the Sunderland side more than a year ago under OâNeill, was injured in a hefty and late tackle in the first half from Poland defender Kamil Glik. But, unaware of the extent of the injury, played on until the 81st minute. McClean has been on the bench for Sunderlandâs last two Barclays Premier League games and OâNeill, who has yet to fully study his playerâs sixth Ireland appearance on Wednesday night, admits the 23-year-old has been struggling for form and confidence this season. OâNeill said: 'When you come in first of all you donât know any fear and donât care who it is you are taking on. You donât know who they are and donât care whether it is Sagna or the right back at Man City Zabaleta who is a really fine player. Blow: Sunderland will bid to bounce back from defeat to Reading 'Then what happens is these players take a bit of note when you go past them once and they are not mugs but top quality players who know the game inside out and suddenly they get to know this player. 'He is having to think about the game which was natural last season and that is a major step up, these are things they have to learn. I have had a fleeting look and he seemed to play with more freedom on Wednesday. 'I think he has been disappointed to be on the bench which is to be expected. I am pleased to hear it but I do think James always had the determination to come back from these things. 'When some sort of plateau arises, if not a slight decline, you really have to think it out. The irony of it all is he might get a bit of respite in the Republic whereas before it was all here and his annoyance was with not playing for the Republic back in the summertime. 'Do I expect to get a tweet calling me a clown? I wouldnât be surprised. I dare him to do it.â Read more: http://www.dailymail.co.uk/sport/fo...re-McCleans-Twitter-return.html#ixzz2KO1N6II8 Follow us: @MailOnline on Twitter | DailyMail on Facebook
I'd peddle him in the summer anyway as he is an average footballer at best imo. McGeady will be a Sunderland player for £4 or 5m in the summer and is 10 times better. Mcclean will be playing in the championship next season and not in the EPL with us.
I'm glad he's done this & hope he stirs up trouble with a load of daft comments. Then O'Neill will definitely have to get shot of him, few quid from a transfer & somebody else on the left wing is win-win for me.
He's a raw talent who hasn't developed within a good system with below average felicities. He two or three years behind. physically he's spot on. send him out on loan to hull for the whole of next season and give them first refusal should we sell. and see if he can mould himself a career. it was only 6 months ago we were all calling him a rough diamond. let Brucie have a go at polishing him up.
this. Doesn't have to be Bruce any club in the Championship, certainly not pl quality atm. As long as we add in a re-call clause as we're quite bare on the wings
This lad needs a kick up the arse does he not remember the hassle this caused before? Sorry lads but he needs to either nut up or go decent player on his day bit, those days are few and far between.
On the field I can see an improvement in the effort he puts in but there's just no end product. He's a one season flash in the pan for me who defenders have sussed out very quickly. Plus, he's thick as pig **** & an average at best player. Can't see him ever amounting to much in the PL tbh. I agree with Cest's judgement of Jimmy but not on McGeady. Although he's 10 times better than Jimmy, he's still ****e.
