at BBC's Sports Personality of the Year. Thoroughly deserved, and I hope he continues to be an ambassador for the sport over the next few years despite his retirement. IMO the greatest jockey of all time. http://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/sports-personality/35111352
The most dedicated of saddle monkeys the sport has ever seen. I'm sure Barney raised a brandy to this news
The butler will be despatched to get a brand new cartridge for the VCR ahead of Sunday's celebration no doubt.
I think we could have a Taylor Swift/Kanye West situation with Sir Barney storming the stage, grabbing the award off AP whilst calling him a useless saddle monkey kunt live on air, dedicate the award to Mr Henderson whilst taking his pants off
Nobody, hunt of flat has ever ridden more winners in a single season. More Lesters than anybody. Do we really need to talk about jockey premierships? 4,000+ race wins. BBC Sports Personality of the Year. A living legend if ever there was one.
Congratulations to AP! i'm more surprised that the BBC are still keeping this show going as they seem to have given up on showing sports coverage - F1 the latest to bite the dust today.
I don't want to spoil anything but I am a little in with the country set and have been hearing that Sir Barney's anger is all a little ' the man doth protest too much', so much so that he is actually being lined up to present the award to AP in person..... and a little bird has added that he is also delighted to be doing so! You heard it here first as they say.
No doubting he's done well Cyc and hard as nails; but all 4000+ winners tells me is that he goes all over the country, riding in thousands of **** races. I judge a jockey on how well he rides and how he gets on against other top jockeys in top races. I'm sure a lot of you are sick to death of me quoting show jumping but I'm going to anyhow. The current world Champion Scott Brash MBE competed as part of the British Team at the 2012 Summer Olympics in London winning a gold medal in the team jumping event. In 2015 he became the first rider EVER to win show jumping's Rolex Grand Slam, all three of the sport's most prestigious events in a single year, earning the sport's biggest individual prize of 1m Euros (£735,000). He isn't even shortlisted for SPOTY which is an absolute disgrace. There are probably loads of Pony Club riders with more winners than him. The number of wins means **** all except to highlight dedication and toughness which, in AP's case, is truly amazing
But they were happy to shortlist a boxer with some controversial0 views and managed to conveniently win a boxing match shortly before the shortlist was drawn up - sums up the BBC
Sir Gordon Richards. "Not until 2002 was his record number of victories in a season exceeded, by jump jockey Tony McCoy. However, McCoy was able to utilise modern technology by flying between tracks and therefore compete in more races than Sir Gordon was able to. Richards' total of 4,870 winners is still a British Record. He also holds the record for the most consecutive winners ridden; 12 (half at a night meeting). He was British flat racing Champion Jockey a record 26 times." Did Sir Gordon get a SPOTY award or weren't they doing it then?
There was a petition to get him removed but.... "The BBC has rejected calls to remove Tyson Fury from its annual Sports Personality of the Year shortlist despite being accused by one MP of effectively putting a man with misogynistic and homophobic views on a “pedestal”. The BBC director general, Tony Hall, said the controversial boxer had been put on the list for his “sporting prowess” and that he trusted the public to judge who should win the contest. Under further questioning by a committee of MPs, Hall admitted: “In terms of the policies that we promote, the BBC is completely at odds with what Tyson Fury has said.” Apparently Nigel Farage thinks he will win
Tyson Fury's invite to the British Sports Awards withdrawn after boxer's threats to Mail on Sunday's chief writer Oliver Holt British Sports Awards will take place in London on December 17 Sports Journalists' Association withdrew Tyson Fury's invite this week He has courted controversy with his views about women and homosexuals Fury first aired his views on homosexuality in the Mail on Sunday interview 27-year-old claimed he was misquoted and issued Oliver Holt with threats By LUKE AUGUSTUS FOR MAILONLINE PUBLISHED: 13:31 GMT, 9 December 2015 | UPDATED: 14:58 GMT, 9 December 2015 The Sports Journalists' Association has made a U-turn on welcoming newly-crowned heavyweight champion Tyson Fury to their British Sports Awards next week, by removing their invitation to the event. The SJA's British Sports Awards are the country's oldest annual sporting awards event, staged since 1949, with this year's edition taking place in London on December 17. However, there will be no place for Fury due to his previous 'threats' made towards Mail on Sunday chief sports writer Oliver Holt.
McCoy may not have been the most naturally gifted jockey ever to get a leg up. But he was the hardest working. And the hardest. I doubt there's ever been a sportsman with a greater will to win, in any discipline. A true sporting griant in a culture full of pygmies; AP I salute you.

As a CJ in the NH sphere for 20 years then I would certainly like to think that bravery is a facet of the award. It's in recognition of his sportsmanship, ability, contribution and longevity. By his own admission he was never as gifted as Walsh or Carberry but I'm not going to crab someone who has consistently put racing in the news for the right reasons. He will do again on Sunday.
