West Ham are set to bring George McCartney back to Upton Park.

McCartney, 30, enjoyed a successful two-year spell with the East London side before he was sold back to former club Sunderland in September 2008.

The Northern Ireland international has failed to find his best form in the North East and was sent on loan to Leeds last season.

West Ham boss Sam Allardyce is keen to bolster his defence and sign another left-back after on-loan Wayne Bridge returned to parent club Manchester City during the summer.

Hammers are hoping that a deal can be finalised this week so McCartney can be available for their next league game against Doncaster on Saturday.

.. Would be a substantial chunk off the wage bill and can be put to much better use. He's never been the same player he was since returning to the SOL, a move elsewhere is best for all!

Maybe I am stupid, but I don't see why we don't just turn around and say McCartney is free to a good home? Surely letting him go for free and getting him off the wage bill is better than having him sitting around contributing nothing and collecting a small fortune every week?

From a business point of view if we can get cash for him (which in this case looks like we will) it's better for all..... Otherwise I completely agree with your point.

Would love this to happen not just for Sunderland but also for McCartney as well, He needs to be playing at a club where he's playing at the same level, I think as a club we've moved way above the level he plays at, I wish the lad well but he's no longer the calibre of player that is at Sunderland or we as fans expect.

Right, I've booked the ferry, I'll be in Portsmouth this evening, should be up there by early morning. What's his address?
