18 Aug 2011 12:29:43 Wigan Athletic are set to become a surprise contender in the race to sign Bristol City's Nicky Maynard. The Latics had a scout present at last nights Leicester City Vs Bristol City game where Maynard impressed with 2 goals. Wigan initially were in for West Brom's Peter Odemwingie but they have removed their interest following his desire to sort out a new contract or sign for Arsenal. Wigan are believed to have tabled an offer worth in excess of £7m this morning to Bristol City which is expected to be accepted. The deal includes £4m up front, plus a further £2m when Maynard has scored 20 Premier League goals. There is also a further £1m which would be paid in instalments. To make the deal really tempting Wigan have told Bristol City that if the deal is successful they would other the Championship side Jordan Mustoe and Adam Buxton on season long loans. Buxton is regarded as a player with a serious future and is a solid central defender who can also act as a full back. He has been making a favourable impression in the reserves and first team experience would only benefit him. Mustoe is not quite the finished article of Buxton but he has a good left foot and is solid defensive player who is best played as a full back. He also has been progressing well in Graham Barrow's reserve team and he feels 1st team experience at a lower level will help him considerably. Both Mustoe and Buxton are considered possible future England U21 candidates and Wigan feel the opportunity for them to train with Steve Wigley will aid them no end. If the Maynard deal falls through, there could still be a loan option for either player, however the club would then want a loan fee of around £250,000 per player which could be a problem for Bristol City whose board have refused to sanction more money for transfers until the club has reduced the excessive wage bill. Only a rumour but definately a deal that could be beneficial to BCFC, it does seem a matter of time before nicky moves up to the prem & we need the deal to be the best possible for the club.
I think wigan could be a relagation candidate this year,is it a good move for Nicky. Could be back in the championship next year.
It's the move to the Prem he wants. It's a serious amount of money that we can do better things with (like a new manager!!!) and we'd be stupid to turn it down assuming Maynard himself wants to go up North to a potential struggler.
Daily Mail are reporting that West Ham are interested... http://www.dailymail.co.uk/sport/fo...-Ham-Bristol-City-striker-Nicky-Maynard.html?
So that is Wigan with a £7m bid (rumoured),West ham and Leicester with £5m bids (rumoured),Keef saying Leicester still want NM and this morning on Radio Bristol Colin Sextone stated "Nicky hasn't spoken to anybody",plus the Nottingham Forest and Southampton bids turned down for being too low. No contract signed, best ever offer from us made, the actual player has not spoken to anybody,2 weeks left, does anybody actually know what's going on please....?
Well I rang him and he asked me what time I started drinking?... Looks like Eriksson has ended his interest - Leicester City boss Sven-Goran Eriksson says that it now looks unlikely that he will be approaching Bristol City again with another offer for striker Nicky Maynard. Eriksson has made no secret of the fact that he wanted to take Maynard back to the King Power Stadium and last night the striker gave him a reminder of what he could do by grabbing both goals for the Robins as they beat Leicester 2-1. Maynard has not yet signed a new deal at Ashton Gate and only has another year on his contract left to run, but the ex-England boss feels that the player is not going to come to Leicester City when he can attract the attentions of a Premier league club or two. 'He is always dangerous because of the pace he has,' Eriksson said. 'You always need two players against him. His goalscoring record is very, very good and he is a very good player. 'But I am not sure that the player wants to come or the club wants to sell so it is very difficult.' Read more: http://www.bristolcity.vitalfootball.co.uk/article.asp?a=251520#ixzz1VTiGxGTb
Great innit when a man is in demand and going nowhere, hang on a pig just flew over Ashton Gate...... http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/football/14576244.stm
The discription of the Wigan bid is in so much detail I am struggling to believe its true. You cant post that much information then say its "Only a rumor" Its either made up or you know something, lets have a source? City should stick a deadline on his contract re-signing, and prepare other options or start preping our targets that if he goes we will be coming in.
Newcastle bid of £7m... Don't know whether it's been accepted or anything like that, would imagine he will be going though. From someone very much associated with the team.
Lummie - I did strees it was a rumour (from a rumour site) but as you have stated there is a lot of detail for it to made up ? It is only a matter of time in my opinion that NM moves on, so we must obtain the best deal for BCFC, which if possible would see a centre half and a left back move in the other direction
