I've always thought that the british PM should just call the PM of the republic and tell him he's handing it back - I suspect the ones who would not like it one little bit would not necessarily be British......
Money flows south from Scotland to London and we get a share of it back. We put in more per head than we get back.
I've seen a few different arguments for this, with Unionists countering with a load of stats which dispute that Scotland puts more in. The one stat I do know is that the average wage in Scotland is lower than in England, so with less income tax per head (and presumably less VAT) I can only guess the difference (if true) is made up from taxing the likes of Oil, or corporation profits. Anyway, even if it were true that Scotland takes more from England than it gives back, living off another country should hardly be a long term aspiration.
