After reading some interesting stuff surrounding our center half Matt Taylor I couldn't help thinking that there were so many similarities to our own legend that is Steve Brown. Both are formerly captains, both are unassuming center backs that take no cr*p. They both weigh in with a fair amount of goals, notably from set-pieces and both like to play in goal. Apparently Matt T used to be a keeper and doesn't mind jumping in between the sticks from time to time. Can Matt be the new Steve Brown? From a playing perspective, possibily........ to a Charlton Legend.....I doubt it, but lets wait and see. COYR
If he's half the Charlton legend Stevie Brown was, he'll be one helluva player. I'd like to think that Taylor is more of a captain, but seriously doubt he's got Stevie's diving headers and penalties... and overall coolness!
Cant agree more with you there, but will play the cautious fan and just see how he does against Welling and Bournemouth first.
Thinking about outfield players who have played in goal for us at one time or another, I remember when Killer replaced Graham Tutt against Sunderland, he was bloody brilliant but to be fair the Sunderland strikers did suck at the time. Can anyone else remember when an outfield player went between the sticks......i think Gritty might have had a go once as well but I can't think of any others.
Gritty at Palace after Jeff Wood (?) had broken his ankle falling awkwardly after taking a cross. Did well but lost 2-1.
Gritt went in goal against Coventry in 1988-89, we lost 3-0 but I don't think he was really at fault for any of the goals
I was struggling to remember who it was Mike T, I remember him going up for a corner, making the catch then just crumpling when he came back to earth. If my failing mind remembers right, that's also the game where we had to play in Palace's away kit after ours went missing. I still shudder at the thought...
To be honest, Steve Brown wasn't that great a player. Average second-tier standard. Although he would have been great in Div One so the comparison with Matt Taylor is appropriate. Great club servant though and I loved watching him, same as I loved watching John Robinson, Steve Gritt, Keith Jones, etc. because they always gave everything they had for the shirt. Steve smashed his knee playing away in the poxy Anglo-Italian Tournament (at Ascoli?) when very young. Without that persisting injury who knows what he might have achieved? Such a shame for a really nice guy.
But importantly he was totally a Charlton player through and through... and he could really hit a shot when he had the mind. Plus he got a penalty at Wembley, of course!
John Phillips, yeah I remember him, didn't we get him from Chelsea?...How many games did he play for us though?
We did KP - the information about him on the Web is very scanty indeed, even on the Chelsea site, this is the only game I ever remember him playing - he was a Welsh international but played only 150 games in his entire career, the legacy of being second keeper to one of the greatest I've ever seen, Peter Bonetti. Mystery man.
Does anyone remember our 4-1 win over Bradford on a Sunday about 14 years ago? I believe Peter Beagrie was sent off and Waddle was playing for them. Steve Brown scored an absolute pearler in front of the Covered End. Brilliant memories!
Remember it well PEA, wasn't the game screened live on tv? That was probably the best goal Brownie has ever scored.
I believe it was on Sky, Kerpowell. One of the few times we have really performed for the cameras! The year before, we were turned over by Bradford 2-0 and Waddle ran the show that day.
