Not seen much commentary on his since he joined. Did anyone else hear the post match chat on the QPR player? One of the other commentators who had not seen us this season before asked where we played him - up front w Austin or on the wing. He then said - wrong position on the wing - 'he's not that bright' - better to just play him with Austin so he can poke them in. Interesting apart as it implies that strikers don;t have to be that bright. Anyway - opinions on Phillips?
He's been MOTM contender for the past couple of games (not saying a lot). Edit: I did hear the bit you mentioned though. The commentator seemed to not have watched much of us lately, he though Phillips had been playing up front previously. It would be unfair to Judge Phillips as "not bright enough" on the basis of seeing one game. ..that said, whilst Austin's the only fit striker, he might have a point. Phillips' holdup play is the second best in the squad after Austin, and he's our second biggest/most physical player. Could stick him up top as part of a 2 whilst nothing else is available.
I've not seen anything on or off the pitch to suggest he isn't bright. SWP has the football IQ of a brick while the same could be said for Rooney's off field IQ but philips looks fine to me either way although I haven't seen much of him off the pitch.
So how much credibility do we give a commentator who doesn't seem to know who has been playing where for us?
He's still very young but all the raw materials are there to be a very good player. Has shown glimpses of what he can do but our incredibly slow tempo doesn't help him. When he gets his head down and takes on a full-back it often ends well.
