Great job done by Franny, and fair play to the Newcastle fans for joining in and clapping Franny on his lap of honour.

Fair play to Ralph. We should be honoured that Franny and Tiss still want to come and be a part of the club, not turning them away.

As chairmen go, he's pretty much the most likable.

Not sure that anyone actually disliked the bloke. You could see from the charity bike riding exploits that he was an ok chap, but most of us thought he was a bit too Canadian Ice Hockey orientated to be a Football chairman. I'm getting the new impression that we are almost certainly wrong. Initial impressions can be misleading.

Love how the emphasis is all on Fran. He has done so well and I am really pleased for him. So happy with how everyone in the club, such as the players, fans , staff, Kruger have all got behind him.

Does tend to use ten times the words normally needed but I really do like the bloke. Over the summer I had my doubts but very much a member of the Krueger fan club.

I actually found that quite moving. You could see how overcome Matty was when he was giving Franny that hug, and Krueger was almost lost for words when he was in the car after the run. The scale of the achievement is almost too much to take in.

Someone else has said this on the Big Run thread, but if anyone deserves an honour in the New Years Honours list it's Franny. Does anyone know how to nominate someone for such a thing?

I agree. They didn't even announce Tiss which would have diverted a bit of attention.

As a runner myself, I still want to add how simply unbelievable this achievement is. I've said elsewhere that it is quite simply one of the greatest acts of athleticism by anyone, ever. If you've never run seriously you might think its tough but unless you've run even one marathon its impossible to fully comprehend the absolute magnitude of doing almost two a day for 3 weeks.

Finally got round to watching this...glad Franny got so much coverage. How courageous of him to agree that Ralph could talk during the run<laugh> Good to hear RK say how important it was to get people back into the fold. We've had lots of good times over recent years, but pushing people like Franny and Matt aside was not nice. On South Today, Benali said they had reached 120K but I'm sure it will get higher...with things like this the fundraising sometimes goes on for months afterwards. He has auction lots from the clubs he visited, so there will be a fundraising night arranged no doubt.

Wow! Wow, wow, wow. Heard his words at the match but to see close up brought a lump to my throat. Respect Franny. And yes, nice to see Krueger doing his bit (but not too much).

Who can be nominated for an honour

Nominations for the Honours List can be made by private individuals or by representatives of organisations. Anyone can nominate a person for an honour, provided that it is for service to the community and is not a self-nomination, although it is important to note that the number of nominations always exceeds the honours available in any year. You should also bear in mind that consideration of nominations for a particular Honours List begins many months before the list is actually published.
Each nomination is considered on its merits so, if you want to nominate someone for an honour, you should be sure that there are substantial objective reasons for doing so.

How to nominate someone for an honour

If you wish to nominate someone for an honour, you can obtain an Honours nomination form from:-
Honours and Appointments Secretariat
Cabinet Office
Ground Floor
Room G39
1 Horse Guards Road
London
SW1A 2HQ
Tel: 020 7276 2777
Fax: 020 7276 2766
Email: [email protected] (Queries only)
Website: www.gov.uk/honours/overview
The form should be completed with the following details:
• the person’s full name, address, date of birth (if known) or age; and
• full details of service to the community, with dates, in the area for which the nomination is being made; and
• a summary of the particular achievements/qualities which make them outstanding
• the nominator’s name, address and relationship to the nominee.
At least two letters of support from other members of the community who have first hand knowledge of the nominee’s activities should be sent, either with the form or separately.
The completed form and letter of support should be sent to:-
• for nominees resident in England, the Nominations Unit (see above for address)
• for nominees resident in Wales or Scotland - see below
• the government department to which that person’s work is directly relevant (this would include people who work for that government department or people whose service has made a particular contribution in the field for which that department is responsible

I suspect that for charity work it may have to be done over several years...perhaps Franny has been doing this?

I know he's been working for cancer charities for quite some-time.

It is one of many charity engagements this year, including running a half-marathon with friend Matt Le Tissier in aid of the Dave Wellman Cancer Trust, of which he is a patron.
“Charity work has always been important to me,” says the 44-year-old, who made more than 350 appearances during his Saints career.
“For me and other players at Southampton FC it was a big part of my work. It was our duty, I think, to play an active role within the community, so supporting charities was always a big part of my professional as well as personal life.”

Thanks Lambie, I'll get a form and send it to the club, as they'll have all Franny's details.

Yes, I was also thinking that this could be made possible. Not that I'm a believer in the honours system, but If anyone deserves one, Franny does.

I'm not in favour of high up civil servants getting it for just doing their jobs, but all countries have a system for recognising extraordinary people...high and low. It's lovely for ordinary or courageous people to be recognised and get a day at the Palace.

Yes, this is what I'm referring to. It's the Old Pals and Courtiers Club side of it that almost totally undermines it for me. It should be just for the ordinary, hard working people doing extraordinary things throughout their lives.

Yes, I agree. Normally I have no interest whatsoever in the honours system, but anyone who makes extraordinary efforts to achieve amazing results in their particular field deserves recognition on a national scale, and getting an MBE or whatever is what we do in this country. If Franny got such an award, it would be a lasting testament to the unbelievable task he set himself and achieved, in order to help other people.
