The beginning of the game was a bit scrappy but the deadlock was broken in the 22nd minute as Charley Wilson tapped in following a cross by Shelley Cox. 20 Minutes later, Pompey doubled their score with a goal by Gemma Hillier. With 17 minutes left on the clock, Pompey scored again: this time Sarah Cox scored from a cross/shot type.... shot. This affiliation lasted until 2006 and Reading F.C. Women were formed. In their very first season they won the Southern League and in the same season completed the double with the Southern League Cup. In 2008 they won the South West Combination league to earn promotion to the Premiership Northern Division, the following season they transferred to the Southern Division. In 2010 they won promotion to the National Division and in their first season, finished third place. After losing top scorer Nikki Watts to Bristol Academy, last season Reading were relegated. Blackburn took the league first before Pompey equalised but Blackburn regained the lead with less than half an hour of the match remaining. Reading: Reading fell at the first hurdle, losing in the first round to Blackburn Rovers who would then go on to defeat Portsmouth, losing 4-3. This is despite pulling back a 2-0 half-time deficit. A flurry of goals in the last 5 minutes, two for Blackburn and one for Reading, meant the match finished 4-3 to Blackburn. Lapras what is this obsession with Womens football? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sFBOQzSk14c crowd looks about right too!
Question for you Lapras. David James djf David James djfVerified ‏@jamosfoundation Does the #transferdeadlineday apply to women's football too?
I think women's football is less morally bankrupt then men's football plus I don't think it's right that women's football gets barely any coverage and certainly not the coverage it deserves. Plus, at the end of the day Pompey Ladies are still a Pompey team and deserve your support just as much as the men do. I'm not sure. According to this site, there is a transfer window for the WSL but I would imagine there isn't a window for teams in the Premier League and below as there isn't for teams in the Conference and below.
He got his answer - it's the first week of August for Ladies TDD. And as for your first point - womens skiing gets exactly the same coverage, sponsorship and prize money as the mens skiing gets so why should football be so different? Unless it's because skiing is so dangerous - I was watching live when Uli Maier crashed out at 90mph and died on the downhill run.
I see your point and I agree to some extent. What makes football and women's football different I think is the fact that there's such a massive gulf in coverage and sponsorship and so between the men's and women's game which I imagine there isn't between women's and men's skiing. If women's skiing received the coverage of men's football, and men's skiing recieved the coverage of women's football then of course that wouldn't be right. I do wish there was greater focus on other sports within the media. It's essentially all just football (men's), rugby, cricket and F1 with 2 weeks of tennis during Wimbledon and I think other sports should be given more coverage. Hockey for example (ice or field) or basketball or lacrosse (especially lacrosse!) or American Football. That's awful about Uli Maier though, how sad.
I didn't mean to put the 2 points together and should have stopped at why should football be so different? It shouldn't. The coverage should be the same. And I agree with your point about other sports. There is though just one difference between the mens and womens skiing - only the men do the Hahnenkamm downhill run in Kitzbuhel - damn dangerous mountain that one. I've never attempted it although my son did about 3/4 of it, said it took him over an hour to get down - he was never going to get a gold for that time The whole course is 3.3 km (the record was set in 1997 by Fritz Strobl of Austria at 1 minute 51.58 seconds at an average speed of 106.9 km/h (66.4 mph), and an average vertical descent rate of 25.3 ft/sec).
I'm not a skier and have never skied but even still, those stats sound impressive! Where is Kitzbuhel? In other news: I got retweeted by Portsmouth FC Ladies please log in to view this image
Kitzbuhel is in Austria. I've only been to see the World Championship there once - you see more on the tv - in real life eventually you get to see this little dot halfway up the slope then suddenly they're there at the bottom. But the atmosphere is terrific. My all time favourite skier was Marc Giradelli - aka the bionic man. He was held together by so many metal plates. Eventually he had to give up or accept that the next fall would cripple him for life. When I see footballers writhing in agony 'cos they've fallen to the deck I can't help thinking what a prat, get out on the slopes and have a real fall, then get back up and ski to the bottom with your broken bones. Nice re the retweet. I had a little twitter conversation with David James on the Plymouth match evening.
May or may not go to this game, not sure. Why do trains have to be so expensive and take so long to get anywhere?
Alas, Portsmouth lost 2-1. Apparently they dominated the game but Reading had a lot of a luck, sounds a lot like Southampton.....
What a shame ! Shame also for Southampton today, they got "Van Persied" at St. Marys, by mighty Man. U
Its very appropriate that you mention the Scummers match on the ladies football thread Woopert! I can barely wait until 10.25pm tonight (I will probably just watch the last few minutes to see the agony on their faces as Fergie time does them!)with big glass of Scotch in hand to toast United's victory against the somewhat distraut Scummers (looking at their board)
Apparently this cup has a group stage which this game as a part of, so we're not out the cup yet. I must say, I was somewhat surprised when I found that out.
