I'd advise people to read Rickie's when they can, he talks about promotion, the first season in the Prem, Nigel/Mauricio and Nicola - as well as much more!
I will probably buy this book.... despite the lack of Steve Williams ... I know he ****ed off to Arsenal, but I was 14/15 and he was my hero.
Here are my guesses.... Loved reading Rickie's section...interesting that he picked a loss because it was his first goal in the PL. Very nice piece.
I'm sure I've read in my copy that a couple of the players you've listed have mentioned their match preference in that book. Terry Paine, I know 100%, says the Orient 1-1 is his personal favourite Saints game. For those who don't know but are curious, it's the one where Saints secured their promotion to the top flight for the first time. Terry also scored in it. It was a long punt down field, and Painer said something like, I just knew everyone had missed it and it's bounced, so I got on my bike [he definitely said that last little bit, which is why it is memorable] and headed it past the Orient keeper. It think there may have been one more game to play during that season, so it was among the last games before the opening match of the next season against Man City, when I started following Saints.
I don't even own a copy of said book....Terry Paine's is a bit of a no brainer really....Saints getting promoted to Division One for the first time.
In that case, let me recommend it. It's a goodie. There's one match where Saints Youth played Manchester Utd Youth [Busby Babes] in the mid 1950's and they more than matched them. Matt Busby told Ted Bates he really admired his team, and he wasn't being polite. So we were doing it back then. Paine was in the Youth side.
Certainly sounds like an excellent read TSS, I've got a birthday coming up, perhaps I'll ask for a Waterstones gift token.
Coincidently we also played Orient away 2nd to last game of 1978 when we got promoted, also drawing 1-1, Tony Funnell scoring the goal. 10,000 Saints fans at Brisbane Road in midweek, wall collapsed with the packed terraces. Mathematically we weren't quite promoted, but last game we played out a gentlemanly 0-0 draw at The Dell with Spurs. We both got promoted and Brighton missed out.
Just read Rickie's 'Freebie'. Brought goosebumps to me. He may play for Liverhampton now, but I love the guy. If he was to stand for MP in Southampton, there would be a landslide no matter what party he was representing. Absolute Legend...and we use that term quite often for the wrong people, but he is. RLSGM we salute you
We have a pretty good record of producing Legends in our No7 shirt.....though I think Shane Long may have to go some to fulfil that accolade.
Yep, but you never know. I thought we had produced a legend in a number 20 shirt, but am now just left with a bad taste in my mouth.
