Surely not... The sheer logistics of being able to arrange for a result/incident within a match of football would be staggering.. particularly when considering the nature of the game itself and the many variables that occur over 90 minutes. Do you suggest that teams were involved? or simply that bets were won over thing such as squad selections, substitutions, penalties, yellow/red cards? In which case it would certainly take a bit of heat of Lance Armstrong and all his misdemeanors
1 game out of 380 isn't bad and it may be the foreign team doing the fixing. I can't imagine many players over here who play in that tournament that would need the money that bad, it probably wouldn't even be a couple of weeks wages for most of them.
This. The statement that it was a Champions League match which they suspect was fixed is a clear hint that it's unlikely to be an English team and emphasises that it doesn't happen in the Prem (or at least they don't have any evidence it does). As mentioned above, the fixing is unlikely to be in the result, it is more likely to be minor stats like numbers of cards, etc.
We know that there is not match fixing in our football but we also know that there are attempts, with the players collusion, to cheat the bookies. The obvious ones involve throw ins, corners etc. They don't fix the match but it is easy to bet that there will be a throw in at a certain time. And you could get a booking quite easily. It has happened and will continue while there is somebody willing to take that bet.
It's not hard really, yes rigging the result or score is nigh on impossible but considering the betting you can do these days: First yellow card penalties Red card Considering you can bet on nearly anything in a game of football
Can't see result fixing as it would need the collusion of too many people earning shed loads of cash. If you are earning £10k + a week (a pretty derisory sum for a PL player) you would need a huge bribe to risk a prison sentance and the loss of your career. I can see people maybe deliberatley getting an early booking or committing a foul or conceding a throw but even then you would have to be so much cash on it to make it worthwhile that it would stick out like a sore thumb. It is not as if the players are impoverished and desparate like the unfortunates tempted by a free holiday in Thailand by drug runners.
I reckon (if it did happen and if it happened in England) it was the Referee* during that Chelsea v Barca game a couple of years ago when Michael Ballack famously chased the referee down the pitch. There were some rather obvious looking penalties that most others would have given. *But I am sensationalizing as I couldn't see any benefit for any player particularly in the Champions league as I'm sure any player in that competition would be on stupid money.
Spot fixing is the easiest way to manipulate a game. There are so many ways that money can be made now, you can bet on ANYTHING now. A certain player getting a yellow card or being sent off, corners conceeded, times certain things happen. It is wide open to fixing. Not so much in the prem but lower leagues where the players get paid less it is a big temptation.
Beefy, From what I was told Theopododolikis (or what ever his name was) got bunged a fiver from Lambert for every goal he let in against Colu. PS. Mikey says and " That's A Fact."
It was alleged in some quarters in the early nineties, that the Wimbledon keeper Hans Segers, deliberately let in Graham Stewart's shot which saved Everton from relegation. This is all I could find on youtube fast forward to approx 2mins 40secs, my opinion still hasn't changed after all these years. New reports say it was Ferguson. He's been doing it for twenty+ years. Sensational story. I guess it was obvious. 1999 comeback, the countless other comebacks. The introduction of Fergie time. The dodgy penalties. He was cheating right up to last season but apparently Man City paid the 'match fixers' off in the 87th minute which saw them overcome QPR. How else do you think its possible that QPR were winning that game? Certainly makes Armstrong look pale in comparison.
I joke but if that actually was the case my whole preception of reality would be turned upside down and I would go into mental break down.
If your very quiet, and listen very hard, you can hear the T-Shirt presses going full pelt at Anfield.
