2 teams with, on the surface, nothing to play for. So can we expect a 0-0 bore? Possibly, because our strikers, who looked full of goals, are misfiring now. Ahearne-Grant might get a place on the bench, but our best young players are out on loan, so there's not much chance of giving them a taster of first-team action. The team should be something like: Henderson; Solly; TBH; Gomez; Fox; Gudmundsson; Cousins; Buyens; Bulot; Eagles; Watt.
Playing them is the only thing that could give me any interest in the remainder of this season. If Bulot and Buyens are not staying, why play them now we are safe? Would have liked to have seen Holmes-Dennis, Obileye, and Pigott play (not all at once, of course). Not saying it is wrong to loan them out, though, as they are playing every week where they are. None of our next four opponents have anything to play for either, so it could get dull. And even Bournemouth may have clinched an automatic or play-off place by then and have nothing to play for. Same for most teams, most seasons, of course, but giving youngsters a run does make it a bit more interesting, like when Harriott made a bright debut cameo. OK, that proved to be a false dawn, but at least there was something to talk about during the summer.
Gomez has played five full games in less than three weeks. He is still only 17, and Wednesday are a physical side. Time for a rest if we have two other CB's fully fit.
My team for tomorrow. Henderson, Diarra, Ben Haim, Fox Gudmundsson, Buyens, Cousins, Bulot Eagles Watt Subs Dmitrovic, Wiggins, Gomez, Lepoint, Johnson, Church, Vetokele.
I forgot about Lepoint, (easily done). If this run of games is not the perfect opportunity to see if he is of any use, then I don't know when would be.
I hope Gomez starts, regardless of who is fit and avaialble today. With nothing to play for, we might as well give the lad the rest of this season to gain experience, before making him a starter next term. Well done to any Addicks making the trip up there today - a real labour of love bordering on certifiable madness.
Personally, i now want Bulot and Buyens to stay, so give 'em some time, but it would be nice to see a bit of youth out there. Having said that, the reports I've read of Aherne-Grant in the reservesdon't sound terribly promising, so I can't see him contributing much in the Championship just yet.
After 20 mins Charlton on top and a "goal" from Eagles wrongly disallowed for offside according to the Charlton commentators. But great save from Henderson on 23 mins. 30 mins still the better team. 8 shots so far, that's more than in 90 mins against Millwall. 41 mins, Lavery for Wednesday against the run of play. First 10 mins of second half, Wednesday now on top. 60 mins. Watt on for Church.
74 mins. GOAL! Gudmundsson after great shot from Eagles saved. Wednesday hit the woodwork twice within seconds with Henderson nowhere. 81 mins. Diarra on for Eagles. 86 mins. Sheff Wed miss a sitter. Hectic last minutes, mainly at the wrong end. Finished 1-1 same as home game but we started with Ahearne-Grant and Tucudean in that one while Wednesday had Drenthe. Deserved point in fairly lively game, so credit to Luzon for keeping them motivated.
Boring game up until we scored. Their fans as delusional as ever / they're going to sign Jordan Rhodes apparently. I laughed that off.
