Mr Oneil, thank you for taking on a Sunderland side void of any craft or invention, but your first job must be to show Bentner the door and aquire a creative midfielder and centre forward. All the very best of luck.

Tis the season for ****e rumours...tra lalalala..

    Let them begin.

Newly installed Sunderland boss Martin O’Neill has earmarked a trio of targets he hopes to lure to the Stadium of Light in January as the former Aston Villa and Celtic manager looks to improve his Black Cats squad and steer them away from the relegation zone.

O’Neill has been promised a significant transfer budget by owner Ellis Short and the Northern Irishman is ready to spend the moment the transfer window re-opens so that he can put his stamp on the Sunderland squad that Steve Bruce assembled during his two and a half year stint at the club.

The 59 year old Sunderland manager will look to make an offer for Man United midfielder Darron Gibson, a player who was close to moving to the North-East side in the summer. O’Neill is believed to be keen on bringing in the Irishman to give him more options in the centre of his midfield. Sir Alex Ferguson is likely to accept offers of around £5m for the 24 year old who is yet to play a minute of Premier League football this season.

The Sunderland boss will also inquire about the possibility of nabbing Michael Owen who is out of contract come the summer and O’Neill may try to persuade the former England man to move to the club in January in a temporary deal that could lead to a permanent contract offer when the season comes to an end.

O’Neill will also look to capitalize on the poor relationship between West Brom boss Roy Hodgson and last season’s top scorer Peter Odemwingie. The Nigerian international has barely played for the Baggies this season due to injury but when he has been fit Hodgson has invariably opted to play new signing Shane Long up front. The 30 year old has been strongly linked with a move away from the Hawthorns and given that Sunderland have scored just 15 goals in 13 Premier League matches a move to sign another attacking option may be a wise one.

Finally Martin O’Neill is said to be considering a move for Tottenham defender Vedran Corluka who is apparently keen to leave White Hart Lane after losing his first team place to youngster Kyle Walker. The adaptable former Man City man can play at right back and in the centre of defence and could well help stabilize the club’s back line.

I'd take Gibson, the rest wouldn't be an improvement on what we already have IMO, if we are to improve we need to be setting our sights a little higher than those mentioned.

Odemwingie could do well for us, though I doubt Owen would

Mind Greg Louganis would have been proud of the dive to get it...Just needed a double twist with a pike to score a perfect.

If that's his wish list then he isn't aiming too high is he, Owen no chance, Odemwingie lazy get who has thrown a strop, Corluka could be a good shout. However we have a full month of rumour control to put up with so be prepared for more of these names being bandied about.

A creative cm is what is needed, we've got players like Gibson.

This is just paper bullshit, but I hope O'Neill understands that we need one!

I'm sure the new manager will be aware of what talent is available. As always, the end result will be dictated by the budget he has to work to.

I would like to see Krancjar or the russian at Everton, Diniyar Bilyaletdinov. And while we are at Everton, we can shop for Baines aswell. Those 2 plus a striker would suit me. I would love to get Welbeck back, but he is in Fergie's plans now, so no hope of that. If I had to name a striker, I wouldn't mind seeing Pav come in. We need a poacher. Not someone like Bendy who prefers to hang outside on the wing or deeper infield than the box. Someone who will always be probing, trying to find a gap to latch on to a through ball.

This is what I don't get about you Syd!
Why would you get a more reasoned response now?
Why would there have been an outcry?
You talk about people who didn't rate Bruce as if we had an agenda.

Any time myself and I dare say many others who didn't rate Bruce, have commented on players who are linked to our great club. Have based those comments on the players themselves and our knowledge of those players. Bruce didn't even come into the equation.

If I think MON is looking to buy a plum, I will say so!

Darron Gibson, if bought before Gardner and Vaughn I would have said definite yes, as it is, is he that much better than what we have?
IMHO could be with regular game time, he looked very good at the start of his Utd career. But hasn't held down that first team birth. (Bloody hell as long as he doesn't go for Carrick!)

Peter Odemwingie, it's already mentioned in Comm's post he has been injured most of the season. Do we want another player in the treatment room more than he is on the pitch? TBF their must be better options than him as a player too.

Vedran Corluka , definitely no better than what we have.

Last Wednesday or Thursday, BBC reckoned MON had moved ahead of Hughes in the list of potential managers because, in a meeting with ES, he'd said he was pretty happy with the present squad and wouldn't require a lot of money this January. Four days later, he's about to sign every player this side of the moon. The British press!!!!
