Having turned down both Villa and Liverpool in the last 12 months, is Martinez simply loyal or just lacking in ambition? Will another so called big club come knocking again or has he missed his boat? It's certainly a risk strategy on his part but at the same time, its refreshing to see such loyalty in the modern game. Your thoughts.
he is waiting for a decent offer for a chance to move up in the standings but the two teams who offered him job one is a poisoned chalace and the outher finished below us this season
I like to think of Martinez as the eternal optimist I do think he is loyal as Whelan gave him his chance but the Villa and Liverpool jobs have over expectant fans
Not sure he did turn down Liverpool, talk is he would join but not with director of football, maybe he just knows what he wants and wont be bought cheap
I think he's crackers. Think he'll miss the boat as he can't keep performing miracles at Wigan and a year from now his reputation could be in tatters if they go down. If he thinks he better than Liverpool he's crazy. I rate him but Steve Bruce got Wigan to 11th, what's Martinez's best finish?
He just knows what he wants and what works for him. At both Swansea and Wigan he has had complete control of the footballing side of the club. This has allowed him to slowly build the club in a fashion that allows his ideas on the footballing side to embed properly. Both Villa and Liverpool wanted him to work in structures he was not comfortable with. Its a sensible decision on his part because if you know something isn't right, its no good just giving it a go. You can be a long time out of football if you are sacked as a manager.
I think it's as simple as the fact he is bright enough to know both jobs are poisoned chalice. 2 historically massive clubs, with to an extent justifiably expectant fans, with little realistic prospect of a return to their glory days. I think Martinez will step forward with a club like us, Toon, WBA etc, a good club, with good support, with a bit of realism. Liverpool, BTW, offered him DOF, a role which just doesn;t suit Martinez (apparently)
if Rodgers goes to Liverpool Martinez should go to Swansea, unlike both Villa and Liverpool they are on the up even if they are not as big of a club as those two.
He left Swansea for Wigan, that would be a bizarre about turn (although I agree Swans have more potential to progress).
I think he is a mug if he turned Liverpool down....that's a big if, as we don't know if he did. Liverpool are still a massive draw, even with a few bad seasons lately...he won't get offered a chance to manage such a big club again......
I agree. Martinez likes to be responsible for all aspects of the footballing strategy at his club, from the youths to the first team, and that was not on offer at Liverpool, and probably Villa. Maybe it is an American thing, wanting Directors of Football like many continental teams. Interesting for us that Ellis Short seems willing to stick with the 'British' approach.
Dont be daft Froggy, its the worst kept secret in Football that Moyes will be taking over at United when Fergie steps down. Theyve been keepin tabs on him since his days at preston. Down here in the North West its almost regarded as the inevitable.
Spot on Syd..thats what is being reported down here in the local press, the fact that the job was there for Martinez if he wanted it, he turned it down as he was not prepared to work under what was to be..two directors of football. Mr Martinez, it would seem was always first choice.
