Obviously I'd love Rafa to stay. But I'm a Toon fan so I'm steeled for the inevitable disappointment. Would you take Martinez as a replacement? He'd have a point to prove, experience in the Championship, and cares about the FA cup. I think we could do worse...
I think Everton was just the wrong club for him. He did well and Swans and Wigan for most of his time but if it were a choice between Warnock or Martinez.... I'm Spanish all the way.
All he's ever done is continue a legacy then when he starts to have an effect the impact is always negative. He's another one who is carving out a career on the back of consistent failure. So it's a no from me!!
He is flawed as a manager, unable to adjust his philosophy to reflect what is actually happening, also like Tufty too busy concentrating on the spin rather than accepting he has ****ed up the team and tactics, given that he has had one of Everton's best squads it's shocking what he has failed to achieve with them.
No. No way. Never. Not until Hell freezes over. Absolutely not. Not even after I've died. You're having a laugh!! You're kidding, aren't you? Never in a month of Sundays. Not even if Chippy gets his hairy backside ( Obi told me ) out in Fenwick's window. Not even if he was the only person left on the planet.
His teams just can't defend at all. The big thing is like you say, look at Everton's squad. Failing with that is just ridiculous. He didn't bother buying a keeper believing this Robles was the answer. He doesn't convince. Coleman, Baines, Stones, Mori, Jagielka, Galloway Barry, Gibson, McCarthy, Osman, Pienaar, Deufoleu, Lennon, Miralles, Besic, Cleverley, Oviedo, Barkley Kone, Niasse, Lukaku, Rodriguez Its a squad that is very well balanced and has some serious talent. He has not developed Stones at all. The lad can't defend, he doesn't sense danger. Somebody should be coaching to understand the importance of being first to the ball, getting across that front post before the attacker etc. He may have even regressed. I'm not even sure I would take him to the Euros. Lascelles has shown more defensive instinct than him but its not just a natural thing, you have to be coached well. I just think he is pain in the arse aswell. His interviews grate like ****. I know people slate him for not openly criticising and spinning things, but to me I can understand it at times - a lot of managers like to keep it in house. I do think he is a bad fit there as their fans like a bit more honesty. He was always going because they've just had a massive cash injection so won't want him squandering it. That would be like spending 50m in the summer backing the manager, watching him fail and take you to the brink of relegation despite saying "judge me after 10 games", then give him another 30m to help him fail some more, sacking him with 10 games to **** the next guy over...
It takes a really bad manager to fail with that kind of talent at his disposal. That Everton squad is easily top 6 material. Martinez is just a dogshit manager. He reminds me a lot of McClaren.
Rafa is obviously the first choice. But after that, I'd have Pearson, Rodgers or Moyes in that order of preference. Then there is Clement, Cathro or even a total gamble like Neville or Ginola who'd I'd try ahead of Martinez. I've gone right off the thought of him coming in.
Like I said elsewhere, if rafa does go I think I'd prefer to take a risk with Cathro over any of the other names who have been mentioned. If Rafa does go though, it's all about changes in the boardroom as much as who get's the manager's job.
Paul Clement? Got a rough deal at Derby, highly thought of, probably eager to prove a point after getting sacked.
I know its been years, I know I really ought to have got over this by now but I will never, ever forgive that man for claiming Callum McManananananananman's leg breaking tackle on Haidara was just a striker's challenge and he really wasn't that kind of player .... So I am with Penfold on this. No. No way. Never ever, etc etc
