MARTIN O'Neill has admitted he is targeting a striker to "lead the line" for Sunderland next season - and add the cutting edge that was missing last term. Green Flag Breakdown Cover from £20 The Black Cats will jet off to South Korea to step up their pre-season programme today, but the squad that journeys to Seoul is likely to be boosted by a forward recruit before the Premier League kicks off in August. And while OâNeill remains cagey when pressed on names, he admits that he is looking for someone to give his side a bit of offensive authority. The Journal understands that player is Wolves striker Stephen Fletcher â and that Sunderland will look to kick-start negotiations when they return from Asia next week. âIt would be churlish of me to start commenting on individual players,â OâNeill said. âBut there are players out there that I feel you should try and get if you could. âThe very obvious point is that we need someone to lead the line, because Bendtner is gone now.â OâNeillâs stated desire for a player to âlead the lineâ would appear to pour cold water on the weekend links with Tottenhamâs experienced England striker Jermain Defoe. He was pitched as being at the centre of a transfer battle between Sunderland and Stoke in one Sunday newspaper. The Black Cats want someone with the physical presence and the aerial ability to get the most out of Sunderlandâs wingers. And OâNeill also wants to add another wide man to complement James McClean and Seb Larsson. But the striker identified by OâNeill is Fletcher â although Wolves have made it clear they want at least £10m to encourage them to the negotiate. Their new manager, Stale Solbakken, said last week that a âonce-in-a-lifetimeâ offer would be enough to take him away from the Black Country. Stoke are also keen. âAt the moment theyâre Wolverhampton players but there can be big fish out there who suddenly comes in with a once-in-a-lifetime offer for them, and also with a very good deal for the club,â Solbakken said. âWe have to make sure weâre ready for that. â(Matt) Jarvis and Fletcher are good, attractive players, and know they can attract interest from the Premier League clubs. They probably think thereâs an opportunity.
Well all i can say is "good, go get him".... Just keep the fee un-disclosed, to stop all the hyper tension on here.
Berbtov is a clever player but not for us, bit of a luxury and we cant afford luxuries, we had one last season.
Talk about stating the bleedin obvious this journo lark must be easy if that's all they can say. We all knew this half way through last season (ie. needing a striker), as for Berbatov a very good player in a good team but, with us I'm not sure he'll be up for it. Hope this Fletcher crap goes away as well no way will he score the goals we need and, nowhere near the price tag Wolves have stuck on him.
Berbatov is available and Defoe, so use some of the sponsorship money to bring them here, get Sess back in midfield, then Mclean, Sebb, Colback, Sess, Gardner in the middle 3-5-2. Also if adam johnson comes all the better. And i am waiting for Harry redknapp to get a premier league job, then we will have to wait untill he is finished in the transfer market!.
Wot nee Catts? Loxuries like Berbatov are like diamond ear rings you buy for the missus....You look at them and say "yeah nice" after a while you think, **** that, what a waste of money...
