So today Martin Brundle finally announced what we all expected - that he will leave the BBC to commentate for Sky from next season. Whether I will fork out for Sky coverage for next year or not I was always going to be disappointed with the move. From the days of ITV F1 through to this year Martin has been the man I would thank most for giving me my f1 brain. I for one would be poorer in knowledge during the races if it weren't for Mr Brundle and his sublime analysis of the action. It's almost as though I'm saying a farewell to a favourite teacher who's moving on! He has taught me much! From the days of Murray Walker, James Allen, through to DC this year I have loved every second of his commentary with those three men but sadly it seems like a farewell from me to him. Even when his partnership didn't quite work with Legard it was still good. I thank him in large part for gluing me to my seat and wasting my Sunday afternoons in the best way possible for over the past decade. Martin you're a true legend and keep up the good work! It's been a pleasure!
I haven't watched F1 in the UK for 10 years, but I was never a massive fan of Brundle. When he first teamed up with Murray, he got on my nerves quite a bit. Has he improved a lot? He seemed somewhat bias and on occasions, quite dismissive of Murray. The thoughts of him and DC in a commentary box don't seem like something I would enjoy. Maybe he's polished the act since then?
I never got the feeling he was biased, particularly when I started watching every race and every quali from 2001. I would even say he's become a bit more opinionated in the years since but he has always been very alert and precise on the technical details of races. I love him for that and I think the chemistry between him and DC this year was an absolute pleasure. I thought he worked brilliantly alongside James Allen as well. Many criticised James Allen but I wasn't one of them. James really let Martin deal with the technical aspects and it worked really well. I would love to see James return to commentary in fact.
I think it was the days of Hakkinen and Coulthard at McLaren that he seemed to get on my nerves a bit... I can't remember anything specific, just seem to remember him being a bit irritating. So who's doing the BBC side of the commentary?
Goodness knows. DC's staying with the BBC which is really sweet to learn of but who will be the main commentator next year I don't know. Fingers crossed it's not someone like Guy Mowbray that irritating nyaff who commentates on football but knowing the BBC they'll pick someone like that rather than a Ben Edwards or a James Allen.
I've just read that the BBC have renewed DC, Jake and Lee McKenzie's contracts, yet no EJ or Ted Kravitz. You'd have to assume Ted is going to sky.
