I have just been reading this fantastic blog on TWTD where the original poster argues the case that Marcus Evans should now be considered to be the same as John Cobbold and how he used to run the club! Now I for one do not agree with this analysis for many reasons but there are some subtle similarities with how the relationship between Evans and MM is now evolving as it once did with John Cobbold and Sir Bobby. A really good and interesting read with some intelligent thought provoking contributions made by other posters further down. http://www.twtd.co.uk/blogs/21428/marcus-evans-and-mr-john
Basically all I get from that article is that the club trusted the manager over the importance of two players, which I hope is the way all/ or at least most successful teams work. Fair play to the board to turn down a potentially large bid but it hardly makes me consider the start of a brilliant new dawn. There is also the possibility that the breakdown of the deals were not good enough (payment spread over a long period or a large percentage being in add on clauses) for the board to over rule the manager.
The blog was well written, but as you can tell by my comments below the line, I found the comparison between Evans and John Cobbold to be very contrived.
If anyone wants an insight into the relationship between Sir Bobby and Mr John at ITFC, it's well documented in Sir Bobby's autobiography, 'Farewell but not Goodbye', Chapter 6, 'The Last Corinthians'... Some of the stories are priceless, and even in recounting his days at Newcastle in later chapters, Sir Bobby referred back to Mr John's way of running our football club. Recommended reading (for all football fans).
Very good book that. I also liked how he commented about Kluivert being upset at losing an ear ring in training under Souness after he left. Robson " that wouldn't have happened under me, as Kluivert wouldn't have been allowed to wear it in the first place "
