    Marco Materazzi in line for shock transfer to England with QPR
    World Cup nutter Marco Materazzi could be set for a final swan song at QPR before returning to Inter Milan as a technical advisor.
    Marco Materazzi of Inter Milan The Matrix returns: Italian legend Marco Materazzi could be headed to QPR (Getty)

    The former Everton defender still has one year left to run on his current deal at the San Siro, but reports in Italy this morning suggest that the 37-year-old could be about to make a sensational return to the Premier League with newly promoted Rangers.

    Neil Warnock’s side are short of players with experience at the highest level, and the arrival of Materazzi would not only be the kind of high profile name the Rangers board are keen to recruit, but also act as a significant boost to morale on the training ground.

    Materazzi, who played just one season for the Toffees in 1998-99, has been a peripheral figure at Inter for the last couple of seasons, but remains a hugely popular figure both at boardroom level and in the dressing room.

    Speculation is that the club will allow the World Cup winner to leave for either England or Major League Soccer in America for one season, before bringing him back to the club as a right hand man to director of football Marco Branca.

    Materazzi shot to global fame in 2006 when he provoked Zinedine Zidane into his now infamous headbutt in the World Cup final, which Italy went on to win on penalties.

    Bit unfair calling him a nutter isn't it? I remember the incident with Zidane and surely he was more the "nutt-ee", as it were...

    Couldn't agree more. Out of form / over-the-hill Italian. Maybe we could tempt Baggio out of retirement for one last hurrah !

    Materazzi is known amongst fans and fellow players as "The Butcher", owing to his reportedly unpredictable personality and overly aggressive play.

    Nice.

    Last season we had Ishmael Miller on loan - what are the chances on QPR signing him permanently?

    I do not think that Colin will sign him.

    In view of today's speculation my revised prediction of our team for the opening match of the season is:

    Zoff;

    Materazzi, Baresi, Costacurta, Maldini;

    Albertini, Baggio, Donadoni;

    Del Piero, Vieri, Zola:

    Manager: Marcelo Lippi.

    Bus passes provided...:grin:

    The thought of Briatore getting involved in team selection again is too grim to think about...

    And what makes this daft "story" any more believable than any of the others?

    Ah yes, he's Italian and so it means that Paladini and/or Briatore must be involved and people don't want that ... so the story must be true. It's good news because it means that it can be something used against the Goons and is something else to moan about and make us throw our hands up in despair.

    I don't think any of us actually believe it, Eamon. Just chuckling at how ludicrous the rumours are getting.

    Materazzi met Moratti this afternoon amid talk of a move to #QPR : "The President told me that I can do what I want."

    **** me, talk about a tourist attraction, the Goons are turning us into Jurassic Park! Any chance of anyone under 30?

    Roller wants young and hungry, Briatore wants old and past it - anymore of this and we might as well all get our boots back down! At this rate Clint and Shaun certainly have nothing to worry about...

    BUT I may be wrong, mustn't blame them Goons for all the crap that goes on. Maybe the Materazzi move had nothing to do with Flabio... maybe it was Amit's doing before he resigned; or Warnock's gone after this old thug in the hope he can transform him into a vibrant, young asset...

    Nah, it's got the Briatore blemish stamped all over it. Man's a complete menace.
