The guy is a total enigma. He does score goals as confirmed in this blog - http://www.footballfriendsonline.com/blogs/2012/9/23/one-to-watch-marcello-trotta-video.html Okay so far it's been at the U21 and Wycombe Wanderers level, but there's no getting away from the fact that he does have a scoring instinct. However his general contribution to the game is the dark side and Jol has commented on the fact. For a big lad he's easily knocked off the ball and rarely does he attempt to recover possession, choosing instead to wave his arms and stamp the ground like a 2 year old. Add to that poor awareness of other players and you have to conclude that he just isn't a team player. He's just been given a new 3 year contract so the question has to be what is he going to offer the Club in that time ? At the moment he's not going to get a first team game ahead of the 3 main men - on Saturday against Southampton, with Hugo the only one fit Jol chose not to select him even for the bench. It's been hinted that he would go out on loan again ( a move favoured by a number of people on this Board) but Jol has openly disounted that. So for this season at least, he seems destined for U21 games only. However that isn't doing him any good, based on his performances so far, and it also means he's keeping out other youngsters like Altman and Islamovic. At times it's easy to forget he is only just turned 20 but time is fast running out for him. And for the Club, not least in terms of re-sale value.
Yeah, it's alright saying he's **** in the u21's/reserves/development squad/Fulham B/Forgotten'em Motspur/whatever but I want to see him in a PL game, especially if he's been given a new contract. Very strange.
Like Cottager I have seen Trotta play many times, and no one was a greater fan than me 18mths or so ago. His deterioration since those justifiable flowery days is so dramatic. I will say it one more time,Jol must ship him out,and he must put in some graft, otherwise he will just become a fringe waste of space. And not to some lower league team whose quality possibly does not match our under 21 squad.
I don't think it's either of these DR. The impression, obviously only from seeing him on the field, is of someone trying too hard, getting frustrated and above all not enjoying his football at the moment. Rosc hits it on the head - he's a fringe payer; neither in the first team or really a part of the U21 set up. You could see it when he got his goals against Chelsea the other night, there were congratulations but it was all kind of muted. The only way forward for him is to get back to basics, becoming a proper team member either on loan for a decent period (preferably to a Championship side as rosc said) or to a new club. At the moment he's 'Marcello in the Middle' and in a rut. Which is a shame because he does have talent and does score goals.
It really is strange to hear Jol praise him so highly and say he wants to keep him here rather than send him out on loan, yet when we have a severe striker shortage, he can't even make the bench. Against City and Southampton, we didn't have a striker on the bench, so if, or when, we fall behind, there are hardly any players on the bench to change the game on our favour. I'm not saying Trotta would come on and score a hat-trick, but a striker is more likely to change a game than a defender/midfielder. I also think he is another whose stagnation will result in unfulfilled potential. I also fear Kasami and Briggs could go the same way.
