I see quite a lot of chatter on the net about how crap Mapou is and how we should move him on etc....

I seem to remember a certain curly haired CB struggling at the beginnig of his Toon career also and also coming with a large price tag.... and he turned out ok eventually .:)

Mapou is the new breed of CB, mobile, pacey and comfortable on the ball.

Yes, he is struggling right now but as with Colo I hope we all get behind the lad because I still believe he will be one hell of a player for us eventually.

Give him time. Just don't try to play him through it. He will learn if he is good enough and has the stomach for it. He's been here 10 moths, I've seen other foreign players take double that. Centre back is particularly tough, they get loads of time on the ball in France.

I think he'll be fine in time, he seems to be an intelligent player with a good game in him.

Absolutely agree with this, he is struggling a little at the present time, but he has also shown glimpses of what a good player he can be. Colo was not great at first, Enrique also took a season to bed in, remember Perch before he transformed into Perchinio. There will be other examples too l am sure, we need to get behind our players and get behind our team. They showed true grit yesterday and held onto what most had already written off. They got a point and deserved all three imo, but even if we had lost, it was the fight and resilience they showed that was what we all want to see. Mapou made a bad mistake and will undoubtably make a few more along the way., Stevie Taylor has done the same repeatedly, l for one think this lad has huge potential and will come good.

Give the lad time and he will prove his quality.

I won't argue with any fans right to criticise, and obviously the fact that he ran away from the feckin ball isn't going to help him, but some football fans have very short memorys

What was I saying..yeah colo as you said is the perfect example. Mapou needs time, and obviously no guarantees it will work out but agree with your 'new breed' comment, he could be really good. He's stepped in at a turbulent time as well so that has to be taken into account, let's hopefully give him some games in a more confident and settled team..let him adjust to the language and premier league and see what he's made of. If we struggle then he's just going to have to adapt in any way we can, either way just needs time. If debuchy starts performing consistently as well then that should really help if mapou does come in, the pair of them were all over the place in a few games.

It's funny, after the first game of the season when City thrashed us 4-0, everyone was calling for Saylor's head and saying he should be dropped. The next couple of games, Mapou came in and we got something like 3 clean sheets in a row. I'm pretty sure if you start digging around this exact forum, you will find posts singing MYM's praises and stating that it would be very difficult for Saylor to regain his first team place. Then poor Mapou has a couple of disappointing games and everyone gets on his back, saying how unfit he is for the league etc.

The sad thing is that this doesn't just apply to Mapou. Debuchy and Santon regularly come in for the same treatment. Very often by the exact same people who were raving about them after games where they did play well.

Coming back to Mapou, what we shouldn't forget is that he's still young for a CB and it's traditionally a position where age and experience do count a lot. Most word-class CBs seem to peak in their late twenties. On top of that, he's transferred into a new league where the level is higher and despite having been here for 10 months, he's not exactly started every single game since he signed! I'm all for giving the lad the benefit of the doubt, and I'm sure all the negative attention isn't going to make things better for him in a time where what he really needs is support.

Contrast that with Cisse, who hasn't had a good game for longer than I care to remember. He, I would argue, has been given plenty of opportunities to prove his worth but consistently failed to take them.

To be fair I'm pretty sure he was deserving of praise, just as he has been deserving of criticism of late. I very much doubt you'll find its the same people who were praising him saying Saylor may struggle to get in, who are the very small minority saying we should cut our losses and saying he is ill suited to the league. He has looked ill suited to the league of late and has left himself wide open to criticism, but I think the general consensus is he will improve.

Only a very small number think he'll never cut it here, some think he will, the vast majority seem to think the jury is out but are willing to wait.

I'll become a fan when I see him head the ball whilst challenged, especially if he heada it into the opposition's net.
