    He is right I guess.
But whining about it isnt going to help.
Is he suggesting clubs let United win to bring back glory hunter fans?
It wont be long before they jump ship and are City or Chelsea fans anyway....
The same people will still be watching, they will just be wearing a different strip whilst sat on their sofa.

He is just stating a fact. Not anyone's fault but United's and the solution can only be United's too. In all sports, people, especially those in other countries, lose interest when the player or team they support are not doing well. We have seen it in snooker, motor racing, tennis, cricket, athletics, rowing, cycling etc.

The premier league can only hope and pray that United recover :)

Who, nobody else has the massive fan base of UTD

  7. Man Utd's fan base is boosted by glory fans from around the globe. If you don't win things, they move to someone else. That's how it works. It would take a few years of being dormant for this to happen though.

    This ^

It's a little different now as Football as much more TV coverage than it did back in Liverpools heyday.
But the same concept applies, the glory hunters will switch teams, and the new generation of kids will pick the latest flavour of the month team to support and the cycle will go on.

You wouldnt believe how many kids in my school supported Man United.
And this is in Milton Keynes FFS, about 350 miles from Manchester, about 35 miles from London, yet all the kids supported United. Fu cking ridiculous.

  9. It wouldn't surprise me if Man City are next. They still have "Manchester" in the name, they have world known players in their squad and are on the verge of being a very successful team.

Obviously, I'm hoping Liverpool make the step up at the right time as I'm sure you will be with Chelsea. The Man Utd fans will obviously be hoping its a blip this season to avoid losing too many.

Highest attendances for what? 40 years or something. At a time when few matches were televised support was based on attendances.

United have been the most popular english club for far longer than the PL years.

    Get your fackts right.
United were the most supported english club in the world even at the time they were relegated 40 years ago!! <ok>

  13. We're not talking about attendances though are we? We're talking about worldwide fanbase, hence Scudamore claiming it will effect the sponsorship etc.

Again it would be United. Englands most popular and best supported club. Liverpool were a long way behind in terms of selling their brand around the world even before the PL. United obviously had the glamour and a few notable firsts that brought them to the attention of a wider audience.

Munich brought the club a lot of affection as well and United are in many hearts because of it.

Liverpool were the most successful while United were the team people followed.

United games have the highest TV audience as well dont they? So I suppose he has a point. Sponsors pay to have their product shown to as many as possible.

  17. Thats what he is getting at but I'm not entirely sure why he is saying it. Its leaves him open to people suggesting it wants Man Utd back near the top of the league which obviously isn't a good position for him to be in.

How were the scousers the most popular before their demise? <doh> you could learn to read yourself before you tell others to do that.

  19. You assumed I was talking about attendance records whereas I clearly wasn't. Hence "learn to read".

I was talking about attracting glory supporters. Generally, its the most successful side that attracts them, hence them being glory supporters. Man Utd have a lot of them currently for obvious reasons but should you not turn things around after this season then those numbers will drop. Same as they did for Liverpool (although obviously at a different scale since TV is such a big thing in the modern game)

I knew exactly what you meant. Even during the period the scousers were successful, they didn't have more supporters globally than United. They may have had a large proportion of "glory hunters" but still not enough to overtake United's support.

Back on topic. The glory hunters may well switch but that takes time. Chelsea and City may well get more support but the likelihood is that more will switch to La liga or the Bundesliga away from the premiership. This is what happened when Tiger Woods stopped winning. Apparently Golf audiernces nosedived. The fanbase just didn't switch to another player.
