Why cant ££££ sell out against a giant like Bayern?

You can buy the title with a sugar daddy, but you cant buy fans.

City have a lot of hardcore fans. When they were down in the third tier their average attendance was 28,000. For some reason they haven't managed to attract a load more fans since they came into money.

Thats what I find strange, they have had a good (for a lower league team) bunch of loyal fans, but cant attract new fans.

And they want a bigger stadium, cant figure that one out.

Every home league game is a sell out as has been the case with home fa cup games
Problem is the CL,we just can't take to it
I do think though that it's mainly because the majority see it as just a corrupt cash cow that allows the select few to gorge in the trough and even though we've forced our way in to be one of them it leaves a sour taste in the mouth.
As far as attracting the tourists goes, while we share the city with one of the worlds biggest clubs, the likelihood of the tourists wanting to go to the etihad rather than old Trafford is rather remote, the only way the increase will be is with the local youngsters if we continue to have success on the field we will have a more equal share of the local kids growing up than we have for the last 3 decades
I'll be there tonight but none of the lads I go with are going but all will be at St Mary's with me at the weekend
    Go figure

In addition to this, you don't really have a European pedigree so maybe don't 'get it'. If you taste it it could become a habit that is addictive. Don't take that as a criticism, it's just an observation.

United have it but don't pap on endlessly about it like we're someway unique like Liverpool do. Still, for a variety of reasons European football has always been a big thing to us and it seems to have bypassed City.

You would think the novelty of playing a genuine great club like Bayern on a winter evening would be attraction enough though.

Why would they pick up so many? I mean they're not a global brand like Man U or to a lesser extent Liverpool. In Greater Manchester you've got Man U, Man C, Bolton, Wigan, Oldham, Rochdale and Bury. Across Lancashire you've also got , Everton, Liverpool, Accrington Stanley, Blackburn Rovers, Blackpool, Burnley, Fleetwood Town, Morecambe and Preston North End. That's 16 clubs in Lancashire competing for fan base, a lot of clubs. You're a Global Brand built over time by sustained greatness. If City want a similar fan base they need to do the same.

You seem to have missed the fact that all United's plastic fans will inevitably become City fans.

    So the story goes.

This is unusual to hear. In the past the so-called "day-trippers" term has been used to somehow belittle fans. Now it's being said that these tourists have some loyalty towards United over City? The fact that United aren't even in the CL, so why would the decision to go watch a match at the Etihad be considered remote?

Of course, it was always so and will continue to be.

I'm merely saying what many lazily consider as facts, not you, because they're simply ****ing idiots and think football didn't exist before Sky came along and invented it.

That's why I stay well clear of twitter, not as much of an arsehole concentrate on the message boards, well, not on the Sunderland board anyway. Bet you lot get them where ever you go. Nowt worse than envy hatred. It's pathetic.

Got a lot of time for Man U, my sister is a season ticket holder.

I think it's partly that, but also partly that City haven't yet really dominated the league for any great period of time. If they had a run of genuine title challenges like we've had at various points over the last 25 years then I think they might focus more on Europe. As it is, their two title wins to date have been interspersed with seasons where they were way off the pace and with no realistic hope of winning the league in the later stages. Same story this season - league champions but already way off the pace and rank outsiders to retain it.

Until you get that sort of hegemony in the very top echelons of the league, I think Europe becomes a bit of a secondary consideration. I personally didn't really focus that much on Europe until around the 96/97 season when we had three titles and five consecutive title challenges in the bag - until then the focus was very much on the league. Until City can actually launch genuine back to back title challenges, the fans will probably have their main focus on the league.

I know what you're saying but I wasn't necessary just referring to champions league, it goes back further.
Some of the best European nights I ever had were cup winners cup runs, the stadium would be packed out.

City haven't even had that really.

Shocking excuse from city and its fans.

Clubs who were only formed in the last decade manage to take to europe and pack their grounds out for even european minnows.

The fact is outside of 30k loyal fans. Unless they are winning, none of them care. Most of thosen30k would probably prefer not to have super rich owners as being small fry suits them and their view of the world.

I don't think half of them can get their heads round being good. They're more comfortable with the gallows humour, 'what are we like aren't we ****', scenario.
