All right this is not a knee jerk reaction against Malky. Most of us would say he has done pretty well this season - he achieved the main thing - survival in this division with a dozen or so games to go and gave us a tantalising view of the play-offs. Ultimately though I bet he is really pissed off at our final position. Most of us are too from a January perspective although not from an August one. Looking back at our last 3 managers - Aidy failed again so surely no-one would argue the case that they wish he was still here. BUT - anger put aside at the way he left us- BR has taken his side to a very creditable 3rd. Do we wish he had never left?
No the only club I would goto is reading Poppycock!!! He knew our financial position and took off at first opportunity to what he thought would be an easier number!
Dont forget MM is very much work in progress as well at this time ,along with the whole club!!! If he went SD would step up and carry on a progression of sorts , althoughI hope MM stays for his sake and ours for at least one more season!
I agree MM is work in progress and in fact the lower finish may actually help us keep him - which would be great - but that was not the question really. BR is a winner - yes he looks after himself but in this life that is what most people do. I don't agree with you Norway - at that time I really believe that it was only Reading that would have lured him away. However he helped to kill the style of play we had under Aidy - all the 606 posts until he took over referred to hoofball - under BR we changed styles - not always attractively - we used to play the ball sideways and backwards too much but at least he got rid of the belt it up the pitch at all costs style. Had he stayed I think he would have been very successful - which is why I think most of us were so angry at the way he left - had we not rated him we would have not cared.
What BR has shown is that he is a slightly better manager than Paolo Sousa and Roberto Martinez. Neither of whom I think would have gotten to the heights they have reached if their names happened to be British. I have to credit him for a good season, but pound for pound I do not think he has done any better than Malky this season, and over the last two years has definitely done worse. Let's not forget that Swansea have been in and around the playoffs for three years now, and ignoring QPR the teams at the top are a lot weaker than they usually are: Hull, Portsmouth and Burnley were as weak a set of relegated teams as this division has seen in the last 20 years. Take away Newcastle and West Brom, who had just been relegated and were both far too good for this league, and Swansea would have finished 5th last year.
By the way, I wonder what the odds are on Reading going up at Swansea's expense in the playoff final?
I hope reading go up ! Leo will have to agree to disagree about Mr Integrity! I still think he shirked the challenge and wasnt man enough to give it a shot , after all we gave him his first shot at management ! If theres one thing we know about MM as a player and a manager he will not shirk a challenge NNW had a point that the Swans have been there or thereabouts for a while know , To be fair if MM would have had the assets that the swans have I reckon he would have got them automatic promotion!
short answer. no. i don't think he'd have done any better than Malky...yes at the time we wanted him to stay, because we knew that hoofball had gone and that things were changing, but his going showed us the man that he is, and knowing that, there's no way i'd have wanted him at our club. Malky has done an amazing job with the resources available, and he's done it because he cares about Watford FC, maybe not primarily, but it's in the mix there somewhere. i don't think Judas cared a hoot about our club. i'm glad he went, even when he did.
Rogers lap of honour with the Russos at the end of the season smacked of dishonesty once he left. He wont be back
My one fear is that Malky will be told that his budget for next season will be no higher, or even less, than this season, prompting him to up sticks and be off at the first opportunity to manage a club that is not in financial crisis. So much depends on what Mr. B is planning. We don't know and judging by his interview neither does Malky. Good of him to go to Preston, certainly better than some of the QPR directors who only go from time to time to home games. Can this man who outwardly seems a fool, have some contacts with actual money? He seems to have learnt very quickly to keep his mouth shut since his interview with the WO. As for BR he has had the ability to get players in when he needed. To my mind he has been lucky, no more. Keep the Watford youngsters together for another two or three years and it will be our turn.
That was strange, when the stewards did that...shame they didn't get off their arses so quickly at the QPR game!
No doubt about that - he lied - said he had integrity but didn't. My point was not about his integrity though - it was his ability as manager. Let's face it football is a brutal world - managers get fired very quickly when things go wrong so if some don't show loyalty they are perhaps no better or worse than some clubs. The question is about his ability as a manager - better or worse than Malky - so far seems most here think Malky is at aleast as good - which is fortunate for us
