Listening to the radio today, I've heard a variety of people wringing their hands (again) about how to deal with players who abuse officials. Is it just me, or are they missing the blindingly obvious?
The only way we'll stamp out prima-donna behaviour and threatning and abusive behaviour towards officials is by targeting the managers, but doing it properly.
They shape their players behaviour, and players know that (most) managers condone putting pressure on officials, though they'll never admit it.
The way I see it, it's quite simple - if a club has a player sent off for abusing / threatening a ref or linesman, then the manager is held ultimately reponsible. For each game the player misses through suspension, the manager has to miss those games too. Not a ban to the stands, which is completly ineffective, but a complete ban from attending the ground on matchday, and if it's club policy to fine the player, then the clubs should sign up to an agreement to fine the player AND manager the same amount.
If managers realised that their players actions on the field will directly affect their ability to manage for a few games perhaps they'd finally take responsibility and instruct their players to behave.
I've heard people say that managers have no control once 'they cross the white line'. I'm sorry, but that's total bollocks. You only need to look at Cloughie's Forest - they NEVER remonstrated with the officials, because they knew he'd rip their balls off if they did - and you're talking about a team containing Psycho and Keane. Look at the difference in behaviour to match officials from Keane when he was a Forest player, to the Keane that played for United.

Look at the difference in the way some football players treat officials compared to how Rugby players treat officials. No arguing, no intimidation, minimal disruption to the game.

Maybe give cards to the 4th official if the managers get abusive book him then if he does it again send him to the stands and 3 match STADIUM ban
