Just saw on BBC news that Danny Wilson is set to become manager at Barnsley for the second time. www.bbc.co.uk/sport/0/football It went on to say that there are a further 13 current managers, who have managed their club before, one of these being Gary Johnson at Yeovil. I was quite amased that there were so many, especially when you consider how quick clubs are to get rid of managers. Last night, there was talk of Glenn Hoddle going back to Spurs. Football must be the only job in the world, where you can get sacked and get employed again doing the same job, and sometimes even with the same employer. I cant say I know of any other industry that does that ! Would we want any of our old managers back? GJ possibly, Alan Dicks maybe, but none for me beyond that.
Alan Dicks definitely although the first few years under him we struggled a bit I liked John Ward and Dennis Smith and Joe Jordan, and also GJ until he lost the plot
I liked Dennis Smith, I was told not sure how true this is mind. Dennis Smith did not want to sell Andy Cole to Newcastle and made it known in no uncertain terms. So the board at the time sacked Smith, employed Osman with his first task to sell Andy Cole. He then left a note on Cole's windscreen to say to go to Newcastle to discuss terms. As I said it's only what I was told. I also liked Ward, and think we could of done better to keep him. Jordan was and possibly still is a hero to us older ones. And McInnes is someone who I always thought will come good for someone, and I'm sad that he never worked out here for him.
Jordan is still a hero to the younger ones as well, I believe I was 11 when he left the second time. I remember watching his games (some of my very first), always loving entertaining football, and believing "yes we may let in 2 goals, but were quite capable of scoring 3". I don't think I have had that optimism ever again.
