How does it work? Do clubs like Everton seek applications from interested parties who may be out of work and not held on contract? The likes of Benitez, Martin O'Neill and Mark hughes would fall into that category and may have already sent in their cv's. I understand they'd need permission from their clubs to talk to contracted managers exactly the same as contracted players, but what's to stop an agent touting a manager around? Do others like Malky, Martinez, Poyet et al have agents who could negotiate under the counter allowing clubs and managers to claim they were not contacted directly? Or would Everton just go for who they wanted and assume the "big club" tag would bag them the prize?
managers are tapped up all the time, no doubting that. i dont think big clubs like everton look at who has applied, they mostly decide on a candidate and go out and get them. other clubs interview say 3 people, and decide from their. big name managers dont want to compete for a job with 3 others, either you want them or you dont is their attitude.......
I think you're right Swampy - clubs like Everton will cherry pick who they want and leave the others dangling. Just noticed that Corals have moved Poyet up to 2-1 favourite ahead of Martinez now - maybe a timely comment from him this morning about having to re-think his future at Brighton.
Oh dear what a pity I will be sad - NOT!!!! But back to Spark's original question, I think it is very much like players and that their agents do much of the work behind the scenes. Whether that is official or unofficial and legitimate or not is another matter.
Surely they must advertise the position in the public domain to give every potential candidate the opportunity to apply for the open position. Oh hang on it's football where the real world doesn't apply. I would suggest the premier league sides know their short-list before they have even sacked/released the incumbent manager. Poyet put himself in the frame even though his contract runs until 2016. After all they may be in a position where another team wants to get their manager from them. I think it's just as big a merry-go-round behind the scenes as it is in the press.
Mancinni's replacement was already lined up. I hope the Everton thing goes away quickly so MM can get on with his recruitment process.
Swamp has hit the nail on the head, they are either tapped up directly on the blower, or through their agent, Martinez was definitely tapped up by Dodgy Dave, when out in Spain on holidays, the interview came second, as it did for Rodgers when he was tapped up by Liverpool, when out in the USA!...................
I think the club and agent use the newspapers as a tool for their means, an 'insider' contacts tabloid and the tabloid runs the story, from there a club can gauge the managers reaction to questions from the media about the 'rumour' and thus decide if they are going to make an approach.
Thank goodness for some decent comments on this thread from both Welsh boards - the **** on the other threads from Phil is doing my head in. I can't see why expressions of interest by already contracted managers shouldn't be seen to be reasonable when a vacancy becomes available - or is that too simplistic an approach? I can vouch that it works in industry from my own experience and to my own detriment on occasions - we just have to live with the real world. Then again I was forgetting - football isn't the real world is it.
A nods as good as a wink in this game. I would suspect feelers have been put out a while back and interested party's have already been noted. Now it's just a matter who they prefer within their budget.
