    Manchester United vs Wolverhampton Wanderers

    Saturday, 10 December 2011

    Man Utd v Wolverhampton, 15:00

Manchester United must put their European disappointment behind them and focus on the Premier League as they entertain Wolves at Old Trafford on Saturday.

The Red Devils suffered UEFA Champions League heartache in midweek when they bowed out at the group stage following a 2-1 loss to Basel in Switzerland.

United had only needed a draw to progress to the last 16 and their failure to achieve this result has fuelled criticism of Sir Alex Ferguson's current squad.

The prospect of playing in the Europa League after the turn of the year is not quite so appealing for a club so used to challenging for the continent's No.1 prize, and United's main priority for the rest of the campaign will therefore be defending their Premier League crown.

They are currently five points adrift of local rivals Manchester City and recent performances have been less than convincing, although domestically at least they have been able to grind out results and last weekend's 1-0 victory over Aston Villa was the seventh consecutive league game in which United have scored precisely one goal.

Ferguson has demanded a response following the defeat by Basel but a miserable week for United has been compounded by the news that captain and defensive lynchpin Nemanja Vidic is to miss the remainder of the campaign.

The Serbia international centre-back was stretchered off against Basel after twisting his knee and it has since been confirmed that he has sustained a ruptured cruciate ligament.

News of Vidic's injury came just a few days after striker Javier Hernandez picked up an ankle problem at Aston Villa that could keep him sidelined until 2012.

Anderson, Michael Owen, Tom Cleverley and the Da Silva twins, Fabio and Rafael, are also out for United, but Dimitar Berbatov could be available again following an ankle complaint.

    Wolves news

Wolves will be looking to pile more pain on United this Saturday but are also under considerable pressure as they strive to pull clear of trouble.

Mick McCarthy's men did at least give themselves a bit of breathing space last weekend by coming from behind to beat Sunderland 2-1 at Molineux.

It was only Wolves' second win in their last 12 games and they remain 16th in the standings, four points clear of the drop zone ahead of a crucial period leading up to Christmas.

Wolves midfielder and former captain Karl Henry is available for the clash with United after serving a one-match suspension.

Henry was unavailable for the success over Sunderland last weekend after incurring five bookings this season.

Central defender Jody Craddock is rated doubtful to overcome a hamstring injury suffered against the Black Cats.

His likely absence could mean a recall for skipper Roger Johnson who was dropped against Sunderland after a run of poor form.

    Head-to-head

Manchester United have won three of the last four league meetings between these clubs.

Wolves have not triumphed at Old Trafford since February 1980, a run stretching back eight games across all competitions.
    Manchester United

    Manchester United

When United were last eliminated from the Champions League in the group stage in 2005, they went unbeaten in their next 10 matches in all competitions.

They have gone seven league matches in a row without scoring more than once for the first time within the same season in their Premier League history.

The Red Devils have scored in each of their last 37 league matches at Old Trafford. They are three short of their club record of 40 set from 1998 to 2000.

Wayne Rooney has failed to score in his last eight league matches - he has never gone nine league matches without a goal for Manchester United.

Park Ji-Sung has scored three goals in the last three matches against Wolves in all competitions.
    Wolves

    Wolverhampton Wanderers

Wolves have not won away from home in six matches since the opening day of the season, a 2-1 victory at Blackburn on 13 August.

They have conceded in each of their last 11 league matches.

Steven Fletcher has scored 10 goals in his last 15 Premier League games, including five in nine this season.

Jody Craddock could start a league game for the 500th time in his career, and George Elokobi for the 100th.

Roger Johnson is hoping to make his 400th club career start, while Matt Jarvis is on the verge of his 250th league appearance.

Surely United are due to give out a thrashing.

    I'm going for 0-0 or 4-0.

1 or 2 0 I reckon. We aren't playing with enough fluidity to romp someone.

Definitely not, but SAF will have given the hairdrier treatment and it usually works after you've been beaten.

We're all quietly mourning our European Dignity.

Think it'll be another 1-0 game. Hope we give out a good thrashing, bit probably be another scrappy performance with a game early in the first half and a super boring affair.

Ah, one of those 0-0 thrashings. I think nowadays that's referred to as a "Liverpool"... <ok>

Hopefully the team can have a good performance and the manager will be urging the players to give a convincing performance and if we do get the 1st goal hopefully we will keep on going and getting a few more, not just playing for a 1 nil win as we have been doing in the last few weeks.

I've seen a few rival fans mocking Phil Jones and making him out to be a bad signing <doh>

Quick question Wolves fans, why do you implode against the bigger clubs in the division, is it simply quality; very strange.

Well clearly we're only winning because Wolves have "imploded." Has absolutely nothing to so with us suing Wolves off the park.
