Manchester United are looking to solve their centre-midfield problem by making a move for Swansea youngster Joe Allen. Sir Alex Ferguson has been monitoring the progress of the Welsh international, reportedly sending scouts to watch his recent games and has already spoke to Swans manager Brendon Rodgers regarding his price-tag. It is unlikely Rodgers will stand in the way of Allen moving to one of the worldâs biggest clubs, but is rumouring to be holding out for £10m for the player as he looks to get the best deal possible for his club. United, although just three points behind arch rivals Manchester City in the Premier League, have struggled to find fluidity in their play this season and the centre midfield area is a place that has been a real cause for concern for all United fans. They have struggled to find a pairing that has worked in the centre of the park, fielding 10 different combinations in their 20 Premier League games. Ferguson has made a centre midfielder his priority in the window, but is struggling to find the funds or even the right player that fits the quality he demands from his players. Wesley Sneijder has been linked, however his current club Inter will not sell on the cheap and itâs doubtful whether United will stump up the reported £25m to get their man. This has triggered Ferguson to look elsewhere and, much like his other recent signings, look to youth in order to preserve the clubâs future. Allen has been in fine form in first season in the Premier League and is rather Paul Scholes-like in his play as he pulls the strings in the Swansea midfield. His potential is huge and if the deal can be struck, he would be a fine purchase by the United manager.
If true good luck to the boy. Has been fantastic for us ever since his first game. If it is a load of b*ll*cks as i suspect then thats fine by me as it means we still have him for the rest of the season. My only thought is that if true hope the board get exactley what allen is worth. If Jordan Henderson is 18 million, what price Allen?
If a loan signings go through as suggested then we MAY be in a position to let Joe go but in todays market what's his true worth and more importantly his real worth to our club
Dai, if this is true, then reluctantly, I would have to agree with you. It would be a fantastic opportunity for him, and £10m is a lot of cash for us - to, hopefully, invest in sufficient quality to retain our PL status.
i agree but £10 million is a great price if we can get that. we can certainly get someone as good for half that price somewhere.....
a bit torn on this one. if we can afford to get in players we want anyway at the moment, and keep jo then to improve the team long term we should be keeping and getting players rated the best whenever we can not selling them ?
I wouldn't sell, unless he demanded the transfer. £10million is a lot of money yes, but he pulls the strings in midfield. He's young, hungry and talented and personally, I'd be gutted if we sold him.
Well I'm sorry but I'm with Jack Ash on this one, can't agree to the selling of Joe Allen, of course if anyone can come up with a young midfielder as good as Allen, then spit it out, but I doubt you can, and remember this, it would have to be someone who has the ability to cope with the pressure of our passing game, and the midfield is at the heart of pass and move, sorry but I'm not for selling young Joe!.............. please log in to view this image
Selling Joe is a No, No. Young talented player, who needs to carry-on his apprenticeship with us. It would have to take silly money for Man Utd to take him from us, more than 10m. Let's be honest if Oxlade Chamberlin is worth what 18m? (not 100% sure) and only proven at league 1 level, Joe has done it at Championship and up to a level in the Premier League. So then this should be the starting point.
this may be a great opportunity for joe to join the biggest club in the world and £10 million is silly money. if its true then we should not stand in his way, we are small fry and will get another half the price so there wont be much of a problem.......
We don't need the money. We always preach players should stay because "the grass isn't always greener" but I think if we sold Allen we'd find out that the reverse is true, that if we sell big assuming we can replace what we have eventually we'll come unstuck. What's the point in selling him now? Buck said something to similar effect not a great deal of time ago - that Joe knows he has a long, long career ahead of him and that he knows he's at one of, if not the best club he could be at to aid his development. Obviously, every player has his price but I think Joe, given how long he's been at the club already, should be one player we look to hold onto, regardless of the offer. If someone bids 20mil, fine, but they won't, so keep him.
But £10 million scott and a chance to join a much bigger and far better club with the best of the best of everything, he has to give that some serious consideration, and £10 million is more than he is worth today, id snap their hands off for that amount.
The part about joining a bigger team, well if the player wanted to go I guess you can't stand in his way. Surely though, we'd just then be in the market for a player like Joe Allen, who, realistically, could cost us 10mil to replace! It's not unrealistic to suggest Allen will get better, significantly, as his learning curve continues, and I'd say he genuinely has the makings of a 10mil+ player in todays market, given a bit of luck when it comes to injuries etc. I appreciate 10mil is a lot of money, but to most clubs that money is more crucial than it is to us as we have no debt. I guarantee all of the contracts players have been given in the last few years have been calculated so as to not leave us in trouble if we DO go back down this/next season, and there's no way the board have set out a financial plan which means we have to sell, and I'd say unless Joe basically said "I'm not playing for you again" it would take more than 10mil to prise him away. As has been said, Oxlade-Chamberlain cost more than that! Henderson had 1 decent season and was worth 18mil... Downing is the most average player I've ever seen yet he's worth 20... the list goes on.
joe could be a big reason why we stay up ( if we do of course ) and get £40m + doing so ! makes the risk of knocking back £10m and the hassle it would bring seem less appealling in some respects ??
