    Awful, awful news.

When growing up, I used to fear heights and hated going any higher than the first floor (yeah, I know...) and often wondered how safe those barriers were being only that tall in terms of preventing something like this.

I feel really sorry for the children that have had to witness that. Seems like suicide - how bloody selfish.

Before anyone gets all uppity a family member of mine committed suicide just over 3 years ago and that was bloody selfish too.

As someone who works in the industry, shopping centres are the prime location for suicide attempts in the UK now precisely cos of their height, easy access and the added attention some crave. I deal with several a week.

Several really? I know someone who works on the Humber bridge control centre and he's witnessed a few on the cameras and been unable to stop them! The ones that are going to jump just climb over and go! How life can get to that stage god only knows?

Yeah but I do work right across the UK and 90% of them have zero intention to jump and are simply making a public cry for help in front of hundreds of people. The Humber Bridge is hardly swamped with walkers right across its span so if they go there I reckon they've pretty much made their mind up that they'll do it.

Do you think you should maybe get someone else to do the talking for you?

Too soon? Come on, you were thinking it...

You never can tell. Someone I went to school with had a wonderful wife, 2 great kids and he and his brother had just sold a half share of their business for £6million. Always was very reserved. Looking back the last time I bumped into him after not seeing him for a while with a group of others he knew him I remember as everyone was chatting he looked at me and said " Do you enjoy life much?". Never thought much of it at the time.
As you say, having his wife find him in the garage and leaving 2 great kids behind as well is selfish. Unfortunately some people are suicidal no matter how enviable their lifestyles are.

I don't mean I actually deal with them face to face, I do the PR after the incident.

So sadly for you, it didn't work.

To be fair, my post was in poor taste anyway. It's a horrible state for someone to find themselves in, and it's hard for most to understand what they must be going through. I'm not sure that will be much consolation for the poor sods that witnessed it.

A good friend of mine has a friend (I know this sounds like the start of an urban myth, but it isn't...) who called her boyfriend as she was on the way home from work one evening. Normal chat - "how was your day, what shall we have for tea, shall we go to the pub tonight?" etc and everything was completely normal. By the time she'd got home, he'd hung himself. Imagine that - she'll be replaying that conversation over and over again until she dies and never have any answers.

    Awful stuff.

Thousands of people walk across the Humber Bridge, barely any of them actually jump off it.

I didn't mean everyone who walks across the bridge is a jumper <doh>

I meant if someone goes to the bridge intending to commit suicide then they'll probably do it, as it's not the cry for help or attention seek like those who go to a busy shopping centre and say they'll do it.

Oh great. Another threads highlights how little some people actually know about depression.
